And there is a setting that allows you to have all your messages (of all types) go into one inbox (using one icon) or into separate inboxes (using two separate icons: one for email and one for SMS/MMS). See if you can't find another message/inbox icon that shows the messages your phone says have been received. If you can't find one, try this: from the Home Screen, press the Menu key and select "Show All." All "hidden" icons will show up.
