BlackBerry Desktop Manager Wouldn’t Install Applications
PostScript, March 9, 2008: Verizon Wireless 8130 owners take note that Verizon recently released a new version of the BlackBerry Operating System (OS) for your phone. So if you follow the directions in the article, you will download “Device Software” (same as the OS) version 4.3.0.97 that might be newer than what is currently installed on your phone. Connecting your phone and starting up the Desktop Manager will draw you into updating the internal software (OS) of your phone whether you wanted to or not. If this is confusing to you, leave me a question below. For more information, see my article on upgrading the operating system. Kelly
~~~
Maybe I missed something but when I installed the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software that came with my phone, I thought I installed everything I needed. Apparently, I didn’t–but I’m not sure who was at fault. No matter, as I learned how to fix it.
My first attempt at installing an application (”app”) on my BlackBerry was with one that came highly recommended: Opera Mini (a free browser that is a worthwhile alternate to the standard BlackBerry Browser).I downloaded it to my computer, unzipped it, and tried to add it using Desktop Manager’s Application Loader. But I got a confusing error message: “No additional applications designed for your device were found”. To make the story short, I discovered that your computer needs not only the Desktop Manager software installed, but something called the Device Software.
PostScript, March 21, 2008: I’ve learned that Verizon uses the terminology “Device Software,” but other wireless providers may use a different wording. For example, Sprint refers to this software as “BlackBerry 8130 Wireless Handheld (TM).”
Since the Desktop Manager can be used with various models of BlackBerry, and new models are coming out all the time, the software needed to make Desktop Manager work with a specific model must be downloaded and installed separately. Makes sense if you think about it, although Verizon didn’t make that clear in the instructions. (Who out there thinks I actually read the instructions?)
The Device Software (as well as upgrades to Desktop Manager, if you care) can be downloaded from: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp. From that page you have to select your geographic region, your wireless service provider, “Personal Email” (unless “Corporate Email” makes sense for you–I’m not totally sure what’s up with this selection), and enter your 10-digit phone number. Click the Device Software link (version whatever-it-is-at-the-moment), do the download, and run that file. I did not take careful notes of what happened next but I think I had to accept/decline some options to do updates (I declined but later it seems they were accepted anyway). I then ran the Desktop Manager program, selected the Application Loader, and observed some updating happen to my phone. At some point along the way the phone rebooted itself to complete the updating process. After doing all that, the Application Loader recognized my phone and the standard apps it already had installed.
Finally, I was able to add the Opera Mini app using Desktop Manager/Application Loader and was delighted at how easy it was. An icon for Opera Mini showed up on my Home screen; selecting it started up Opera Mini and from there it was very intuitive how to use it (although I choose to read Help against my better male instincts).
Later, I came to find that my 8130 does not have a ton of extra memory for applications. How I addressed that is in another post.
P.S.–Credit and thanks for this fix must go to the admin of AllBlackBerry.com (see details).
Thank you, thank you — I’m downloading now, so no final report on the phone’s status just yet — but since I ran into the exact same error, I’m optimistic that this will work.
I hope it worked for you, Allison. One reason I spend so much time on this blog is in the hope that what I learn can be used by others. I have benefitted immensely over the years from the help I’ve received from others on the Internet, so it’s about time I pay something back. Would love to hear back to know if your problem got fixed.
Hi. I am having the same problems as Kelly. i just got a new Pearl with new software. I tried loading new apps to the phone and got this msg “The BlackBerry desktop software does not have BB Device Software for that device that you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service or system admin.” Since this is a personal phone, I do not have a system admin.
” I removed it, downloaded and installed it and it was older than my phone. I am still having problems loading apps into the phone. The problem maybe that I am using XP 2000. I am not sure if this software supports this old a version of XP. But then again, why wouldn’t it?
Any help would be GREAT!!! Thanks!
Malar
Malar,
If you read and follow carefully my entire post on this problem, you have a good chance at resolving your problem. The computer I used was running Windows XP. Did you mean that yours is running Windows 2000? XP and 2000 aren’t that different, so I doubt that is the problem. I did not read where you downloaded the Device Software that allows your BlackBerry Desktop Manager to work with your Pearl. That is the most important step you must take. Go to http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp , and scroll down the page till you find (1) your geographic region, and (2) your wireless provider, and click that link. From there, follow the directions as best you can. If you can get the Device Software loaded on your computer, you might get your problem fixed. Let me know how it works out.
Kelly
I’ve done all that you said and I’m still having the same error re: applications that are not designed for Blackberry device. Please help!
Darryl,
Allison and Malar who commented on this post never returned to let me know if my solution worked for them or not. You might want to email me (kellydcarter AT yahoo.com) outside this blog with more information. Is your desktop running WinXP, Vista, or what? Am I correct that you downloaded the Device software, having chosen the right region and provider (for me that was North America, Verizon)? On the Verizon site, did you choose Personal Email or Corporate Email? Did you choose the right model of Blackberry (I’m assuming 8130)? Did you choose BlackBerry Device Software v4.3 (updated 11-13-2007)?
Kelly
Kelly,
I am using Win XP; I have installed v4.3 software. In fact I downloaded, removed and reinstalled the software that came with BB (it was 4.3) and still no dice! I am with Bell Mobility (Canada) and spoke with their tech today for about an hour on the phone to no avail - he told me to call the manufacturer of the software to get correct settings. My BB was purchased in Dec. with the most updated software. I chose personal email, etc. Hope this helps you in helping me solve this issue.
Thanks,
Darryl
manufacturer of the application
I just resolved this issue! I downloaded the handheld software and presto - she’s working fine! Thanks for your help.
Darryl
I’m glad you got your problem fixed. It’s not clear what made the difference unless you had been working only with the Desktop Manager Software (which is 1/2 of the solution) and then, finally, the Device Software (which is the other 1/2 of the solution). That was the key for me–realizing I needed to download and install the Device Software. Thanks, Darryl
Once I installed the device software, it solved the problem, “No additional applications designed for your device were found”.
Thanks a lot.
Thanks for this post! It helped me out.
Verizon definitely does not make this extra step clear.
Thanks for the help.
I just checked the setup guide and they left out the device software download.
Thanks. After 2 calls to Verizon’s tech support and an hour on the phone with RIM, they couldn’t figure out the application install problem. This fixed it.
LIFESAVER… I’ve had my Sprint 8130 for a month or so now, and I didn’t even realize I HAD this problem - most of the things I’ve loaded thus far were done OTA… Imagine my surprise when this error message popped up today. Anyway, I’m currently DLing the required software and hopefully will be running at 100% again soon. Thank You!
Thanks for this information regarding Device Software. I had the dreaded “No additional applications designed for your device were found” on my Desktop Manager and asked for help on several forums…but nobody said anything about Device Software!
Now I’m able to install apps through Desktop Manager with no problems
Jim,
Don’t throw in the towel just yet. I’ll email you some suggestions and if we figure out something that fixes it, we can post the results back here for others to benefit from.
Kelly
Hi Everyone,
I’m a basic user, I got my 8130 saturday and I want to upload pictures form my computer to my address book on the phone.
I installed:
- VZAccess manager (disc included with phone)
- Desktop manager (disc included with phone) also.
I don’t find anywhere how to transfer pictures from my pc to my BB…
If I download the Device manager, will I be able to do it?
by the way, my “blackBerry Desktop manager doesn’t look like the one on top of the page. i have only 4 icons:
- Synchronize
- Backup and restore
- Application loader
- Switch device wizard.
What is the fifth one on the picture???
I was able to transfert from my Palm Tungsten T5 my:
- Address book,
- Note pad
- Tasks
- Calendar
as I said I’m a basic user, i have a Ipod to listen to my music, A palm pilot to do everything else than calling. I have access to my email addresses without problem, just what I want (and I will be really happy with my phone) is to be able to:
- Transfer pics from my pc to my BB
- create my contacts on my pc and transfer them over to my BB.
Please, help me
Thanks,
Mazhev
Hey,
It’s me again, I’ve just intalled the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, from the link given at the beginning and now I have 6 icons !
I have the media manager and sychronise Certificates icons now !!!
I’m about to intall the other part (device manager) but I’m already happy with what I did thanks to you !!!
Mazhev
Mazhev,
Do you have a micro SD card for your media (pictures, music, etc.)? You really should get one, if you don’t. For your micro SD card, make sure it’s formatted and has folders created to put the media in the correct places. See my comment #2 to Adriana here: http://blackberry8130.wordpress.com/2007/12/09/tips-and-tricks-at-discoverblackberrycom/. Transfer your pix from your old phone into the “pictures” folder on the micro SD card.
To create your contacts on your computer and transfer them to your BlackBerry, see this post: http://blackberry8130.wordpress.com/2008/01/19/managing-contacts-in-the-address-book-using-excel/.
Let me know how it goes if you follow the above two recommendations.
Kelly
Hi,
I have a question about saving the contacts on a BB 3180. The phone in question actually belongs to my boss, an attorney, who needs it for all of his contacts and calendar capabilities. When I first installed the Desktop Manager onto my computer, everything transferred just fine. Then I performed the first sync with Outlook 2007, it deleted all but one of his contacts (which I thought was a little weird) and I found them in the “to be deleted” folder. Somewhere else on the net, I read that to correct that problem, uninstall the software that came with the disk and then go to the website and download it from there. The service he uses is Alltel and they weren’t really very helpful with this problem after spending nearly an hour on the telephone with them trying to get a resolution.
Now, having read the previous posts, am I correct in reading that there is a separate program that actually has to be installed into the BB itself? I have yet to d/l the DM back into my computer, it’s incredibly slow (I use XP).
Is there anything that you could suggest as far as this problem goes?
Thanks so much for the review, it has been very helpful. I’m learning way more about his phone that I am about mine (a simple razr…lol).
Debbie
Debbie,
You’re not the first person to have to sync a boss’ cell phone. I hope you’re getting paid extra for this!
First let me make clear that the post that you commented on dealt with the issue that most wireless providers (e.g., Verizon, Sprint) are apparently not making clear that after installing Desktop Manager from the CD that comes with your phone, you ALSO need to download the specific Device Software for your model phone and for your provider. Some things apparently work without the Device Software loaded, but not the Application Loader–and I’m not certain about Synchronize feature.
I can believe the AllTell folks couldn’t figure it out, as I keep getting reports that my blog has helped people better than tech support at their wireless provider or RIM. I wish that weren’t true–and I’m not gloating about it–but there have been cases of that reported.
Now, to answer one of your questions, there is nothing you need to download into the BlackBerry itself. The Desktop Manager and Device Software (2 separate programs) need to be installed on the computer. You can get both–and most recent versions–from the web using the link I provided in the article.
When you try a sync (whether using Outlook, Yahoo, ASCII Import/Export, etc.), you have to be careful in WHICH DIRECTION you do the synchronizing. I imagine your first try with your boss should have been to sync from a fully populated Outlook contact list into an empty (or partly empty) BlackBerry Address Book. So, the first sync should have been FROM Outlook TO BlackBerry. Only if your boss adds a new contact to the BlackBerry then wants to add it to Outlook should you ever need to sync FROM BlackBerry TO Outlook.
The Desktop Manager Synchronizer should warn you if you’re attempting a sync in a direction where some contacts might be deleted or overwritten. So, if in doubt, cancel the sync and double-check the direction you’re attempting to sync in.
I do not do Outlook syncing myself; I’ve only done syncing with Excel files and with Google Sync (Google Calendar), and I’ve done OK with that. So, if I end up being wrong or incomplete in what I’ve told you, please return and straighten me out.
Let me know how things progress, please.
Thanks,
Kelly
Hi, I also had the same problem with my 8310. I am new to BB so am learning….your blog helped point me in the right direction and after looking around on my service provider pages managed to find the appropriate downloads and I now am able to install applications from my PC. Great!
Hey Kelly,
In case I forgot to mention it with my first few posts, thanks for a very useful and well-organized blog… It’s especially nice to be able to bond with fellow BB rookies and help each other out a bit… So thank you.
Now, as a sidebar to Debbie’s issue (and Debbie, I agree with Kelly - you should be receiving a stipend for dealing with your bosses’ BB needs)… I was able to sync my Pearl with my Outlook WITHOUT the device-specific software installed (although it is certainly something that should be installed regardless). I DID have an issue the first time I synced, though, where through some strange series of events, I deleted all of my contacts on one end of the sync while they remained on the other. After that frightening episode (and after backing everything up - again!), I very carefully went to the “Sync Settings” in Desktop Manager (DM) and set them all in one direction, from where the information was to where I wanted it, and re-synced. After that, I was able to set the arrows in both directions - the way that I need them - and I haven’t had a problem since.
Like I said - it’s more of a sidebar than an explanation or a solution - just so you don’t feel alone, Debbie. And that device-specific software (the stuff Sprint never told me about :-/ ) SHOULD be installed anyway, so that when your boss comes back and asks you to load new software onto his BB, you don’t have the same issues so many of us have.
Good luck (hey, with all your new tech-know-how maybe it’s time for you to trade in that RAZR!).
Hi Kelly,
Thanks so much for the information on the directionality of the download/upload from the Outlook to the BB. I can get the calendar properly loaded, but still only getting the one contact into the BB from my computer. I tried several times to get it to upload from my computer to the BB, but finally gave up. He had to leave and take his phone with him. I’ll try again on Monday. And keep you posted on the progress, maybe what I learn can help someone else, too.
BTW, I really like your blog and thank you so much for being such a huge help in explaining this process to me. It’s starting to make sense to me.
Debbie
Debbie,
THANKS for returning to continue the conversation. Some problems take longer to understand and resolve, so it’s great to maintain a thread until a solution is found. And thanks for the kind word about the blog. I’m having a blast with it, although it takes a LOT of time.
Kelly
Hi,
I am having the APPS installing issue and getting frustrated.
Question, where do you get the Handheld software and where does that get installed. The PC.. I have DM installed but cannot load an app..
Thanks for the help,
justin
Justin,
My article above points you to here: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp. There you can download either the latest version of Desktop Manager or Device Software. I think what you need is just the Device Software. You’ll need to specify your wireless provider and your model of phone. Also, you’re asked to choose Personal or Corporate email. I’m not totally sure what that’s about, but I chose Personal. I have had many blog visitors get their problems fixed by using that advice, so I trust you will, too. Make sure you read the article in its entirety. If you don’t get it fixed, get back in contact with me.
Kelly
Now that I think about it, I think i know what I did wrong,, I got the file from verizon, and uninstalled my Original version of DM.. then tried to install the update..
Im pretty sure all i need to do is:
just run the update, and not uninstall the version of DM i have installed.
I will try this when I get home.
Thanks for your help..
Justin,
I’m not crystal clear on what you’re going to try. You do need Desktop Manager installed (I recommend the latest version). You do need the Device software installed (same recommendation)–to add/remove Applications from your phone using your computer (versus over-the-air). I had one blog reader have to do something more, but I’d have to search and figure out what, or if I’m confusing this with a separate problem. Stay in touch.
Kelly
Im with verizon and have a 8130 phone..
I installed Device Manager with the cd that came with the phone..
Then I installed the patch from the VZW site.. still wont work..
The “Device Software” feild in “About Desktop Manager” is empty..
I cannot load an app on my phone.
I see:
Blackberry Device Manager Ver: 4.3.0.7
Application Loader: 4.3.0.13
Device Properties:
Application Version: 4.3.0.60
I just want to be able to load an application.
Figured it out, i just needed:
BlackBerry Device Software v4.3 (updated 11-13-2007)
at http://vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry/
Two links one is for Device Manager and one is for Device Software..
justin,
Yep–Device Software is the program that 8130 owners apparently are not told to install (based on the traffic through my blog). But it’s needed to do the Application Loader inside Desktop Manager. Thanks for confirming that’s what was needed for you.
Kelly
Yep.
Ive been to that so many times.. but I thought they were both version of desktop manager.. looking them over too quickly and picking the latest date..
thats what was misleading.
Hi Kelly,
Here I am again, I still don’t have a resolution as to how to get the contacts from the Outlook 2007 to the BB, but I did learn something about MSN email (my boss subscribes to that service) that is to be used in conjunction with the Outlook.
Apparently, there is a “connector” which needs to be downloaded where a person can actually email all the contacts that were in the BB to Outlook by using the Import/Export on MSN. Then, when it is received by the Outlook, it can then be exported to the BB. This sounded ideal, but it didn’t work for me. So, today, I took a break from it..lol. I did have a thought, though. Is it possible to retrieve information from my computer or the MSN account using the BB? If so, how is this done?
Tomorrow, I’ll start over from scratch, again. Oh, one more thing. While I was in the process of the aforementioned “activities”, my boss got Alltel customer service on the telephone. A young lady informed me that the 8130 has a “memory leak”. I wanted to ask, “On which bush?”. Anyways, I am not too clear on whether or not it is something that is specific to Alltel or the 8130 itself. She said that individual owners would be notified as soon as their update is available. She wasn’t very specific about the release date, either. So, I signed my boss up for the BB newsletter that will notify BB owners of this update as soon as it becomes available.
I’ll keep you updated on the progress. But, as it stands at the moment, I’m not sure how to deal with the “leak”.
Thanks for letting me post here about my experiences and I’ll be back often to learn as much as possible.
Debbie
p.s., Sean, thanks for the suggestions. My boss has indeed compensated me very well for my efforts…(O: And I’ll have to think on getting a BB, not sure if I need to have a phone that leaks…lol.
Debbie,
I don’t think I can answer all your questions at once, or comment on everything, but here’s a start.
I know a tad about “connectors” but haven’t had to download or use one yet. Would like to know where you’re downloading one from.
I’m not sure I can help more on the Outlook sync because I don’t know if we resolved the earlier issue of “directionality” of the syncing.
About “memory leaks”: That refers to the gradual process of a computer (or BlackBerry) running out of free memory, usually due to (1) a defect in a program (operating system or application), or (2) a continuing build-up of files such as messages, logs, temporary files, pix, flix, etc. [Actually, I wouldn't define (2) as a "memory leak" but it has the same effect.]
Does the 8130 have an inherent problem with memory leaks? I can NOT find any evidence of that after a LOT of searching. There are plenty of claims but nothing convincing to me. Whether your 8130 is “leaking” memory or not depends on what applications you are running, whether you’re leaving them running when you should be closing them, whether you’re piling up tons of trash files you don’t need, etc.
I bought my 8130 in November and haven’t had a single problem of memory leaks. As described in my post on Viigo, I did load my phone with too many apps–Viigo being the straw that broke the camel’s back–and that caused my phone to go nuts till I unloaded Viigo. After that, I learned to delete some junk I didn’t need, like the huge sample video file. I reinstalled Viigo and didn’t have any more problems. I NEVER pull out my battery–the so-called Hard Reset–like many people say they have to do to keep memory freed up. I would find that unacceptable. I do have my phone set to Auto Power Off at night, so that amounts to a Soft Reset every day. Not sure if that would be hiding or fixing a memory leak or not.
Still, memory problems are plaguing a lot of 8130 owners, so I’m trying to stay on top of that and may do a post on that sometime.
Kelly
Hi Kelly,
I just ran across your blog and have a pleasant feelingb of relief! I can’t wait to get home and try this on my wife’s new Pearl 8130. I spent about 2 hours last night in frustration trying to get this thing to work. I had purchased a contacts manager from Handango only to find out I couldn’t get it to work.
As for why Verizon doesn’t tell you the about the device driver software, I’m sure it’s the same reason they don’t allow you to install your own ringtones on their phones and will not allow you to use the full Bluetooth functionality. It’s all because they want you to purchase their applications and not 3rd party ones. They can control things a little better with normal cell phones because they can lock out certain functionality. It allows only them to offer the applications at a controlled cost. $2.95 ringtone, anyone?
To me, it ranks up there with banks charging you money for withdrawing your money from an ATM. It’s robbery. Just my opinion.
i just got a 8130 from sprint and it is sweet.
i tried loading apps from DM and i get the error everyone is getting. I tried going to the website from the link that has been posted and going to north america and then to sprint l.p. but i do not get the personal email or corporate email option. it goes straight to device and desktop manager versions.
i really want to loads apps on my blackberry but can’t since i cannot find the device software for sprint.
can anyone help me?
please?
@Ignacio,
You say “it goes straight to device and desktop manager versions.” Well, that’s OK, isn’t it? You want to download the DEVICE software (latest version)–that was the whole secret to the article. Go back and give that a try–download and install the DEVICE software (for 8130 and Sprint). Then see if the Application Loader stops giving you that error. It has apparently worked for everyone who has tried it.
Kelly
i have a blackberry 8130 and i seem to not have enough memory to recieve sms texts or phone calls. i bought a media card for it and put all my media on it and i still dont have enough memory.
taylor,
Are you doing Options > Status to determine how much free memory you have?
If you pull the battery, wait a bit, then replace the memory, is there still very little memory free? (This should close any applications you left open accidentally. This isn’t the proper way to close them, but it’s a quick way to determine if that was part of the problem.)
Are you keeping a lot of old messages or deleting them?
You did good to move your songs, pix, flix, etc. to a media card. But messages and applications that run do NOT take advantage of the media card, so you have to keep the “system” memory clean, too.
Let me know what you find.
Kelly
Please Help!. I got a blackberry 8130 from Verizon and Im having the same problem with 3rd parties applications. It keeps giving me an Error saying “No additional applications designed for your device found”. I downloaded the most current version for device manager and I still get the same error I even downloaded the VZ Access Manager again. I have windows XP. I never had this problem with my old Blackberry 8100. Can you please help me? this is so frustating!
Antonia,
Relax…you can fix this! What you may have missed in the article is the need to download a SECOND program named the DEVICE SOFTWARE. There are different versions of the Device Software for the 8100 and 8130–because they are actually different devices (although similar).
Follow the link provided in the article, specifying your provider (Verizon), your model (8130), and your email (personal not corporate), etc. HOWEVER, make sure when you finally get to the downloads page, you pick the DEVICE Software and not the Desktop software.
Download and install that program. I always recommend rebooting your computer to make sure everything is “clean,” then try again to get your Application Loader working. So far, those directions have fixed the problem for everyone I know of.
Let me know how it works out for you.
Kelly
Thanks a lot Kelly! That fixed my problem! Do you know of any programs I can use to change the trackball color on my 8130. I used to have the Pimp my Pearl color track back for my 8100 but it doesn’t work on the new Pearl. Any suggestions?
Antonia,
What a pro! You did it!
It is impossible to change the color of the 8130 trackball because it has only a single, white LED behind it. The 8100 had several LEDs of different colors. EVERYbody wants to do this, but you just can’t with the 8130.
Thanks for returning to post your wonderful results. That really gets me pumped up that my blog is helping nice people like you.
Bye,
Kelly
Still not able to get the app loader to install any software.
I have an 8130 from Sprint. I never installed the software that came with the phone, but I did download it from the Blackberry site. From what I can see, the download for 4.3 now contains both the Desktop manager and the device manager.
When I plug my phone in to my computer, everything works and i see two icons on my taskbar for Blackberry Device Manager and Connected - Desktop Manager.
I look at the device manager and my phone is in there.
However, when I try to install any application file, it says “No Additional Applications were found for this device”
At a loss of what to do. This is also happening at Work with the same software installed. Home is Vista, work is XP
Craig,
I think you’re mistaken about the Device Software being “built into” the Desktop Manager. There are probably dozens of different versions of the Device Software–for different models and different wireless providers. Each is 50-100MB in size. No way can they could be built in. I’ve repeated this technique many times, as have numerous readers. Try my instructions again and make sure you do the download of the Device Software (not Desktop Manager) for the model and wireless provider you use. So far, I have not had one person report they could NOT solve this problem by carefully following those instructions. And hundreds (or more) have done it (only a tiny number have left comments). I think your two icons are misleading you. I have got this working on both XP and Vista. Please try again and let me know what happens.
Kelly
P.S.–Many features of the Desktop Manager work WITHOUT the Device Software. But not the Application Loader. It absolutely requires the Device Software. It’s a HUGE problem not being addressed by wireless providers. I have now had several thousand readers (in only 2-3 months) click the link to go download the Device Software. And I’m just one web site providing that service.
nice. after reading this and (whoa!) following directions, it worked like a charm. opera is installing as i type. thanks for having an incredibly useful site.
m
Thanks for the response. Not sure what else I can do, but it’ll repeat the steps over in this thread.
When I go to the Blackberry download site and select my provider (Sprint), I am given the option to download two sets of files. The first one is is the Blackberry Desktop Software 4.3 which is 500+ megs in size. The other is “Blackberry 8130 Wireless Handheld” software.
Selecting the Desktop Software 4.3 gives me just one file to download and the title is “Download includes: Desktop Manager and Device Manager” This is why I said the Device Manager software was “built in” because it’s included in the description.
After downloading the file and going to install, it wants to install both the Desktop Manager and the Device manager. Both of which were installed correctly.
I don’t really see any other avenues of getting to a separate second download for Device Software.
Is it the “Blackberry 8130 Wireless Handheld” download I need?
Love the blog, by the way. Thanks for helping us out!
Well I guess I should have tried it first before posting. I downloaded the second option for the “8130 Wireless Handheld” and now I have all sorts of software updates, including the ones I downloaded.
WOOT. Thanks a lot =) I just got confused by the wording of the downloads.
Craig,
This problem isn’t YOUR fault. It’s a disgrace that wireless providers aren’t doing more to make sure their customers receive the software they need to get the full value out of their phones. And the wording of the download sites needs improvement. I’m just glad you hung in there through all the frustration. I KNEW you would succeed!
Kelly
Thanks so much! Since I have had my phone I have wondered why I could not ever get a app. to download and the same message you are talking about pops up. It has been driving me nuts!!! Thanks again, im happy to learn this! Now I can upadate apps. actually.
I have never felt like reading directions either…
OK, I have been reading about this issue for awhile and now I am experiencing the problem for myself.
I don’t think I’ve missed anything, Kelly. I downloaded not only the Blackberry desktop manager but also the device software. I successfully ran the device software installer and went to the Application Loader.
When I run the Application Loader it seems to see all the device stuff and updates. I go through the steps of installing the updates and the Application Loader hangs at the point: Connecting to device ROM. It hangs for a long while and then closes with this error message:
Unspecified error encountered [A:0x00000001]
I have done this multiple times.
This last time I deleted all photos and anything I thought could be hogging device memory and the problem was the same, so I don’t think memory is the issue here.
Can anybody help?
Mike,
This doesn’t have the feel of a problem one can think through–there are too many puzzle pieces missing. I would try dropping back and trying to recover some stability then work forward from there.
First, I’m not clear what all the updates are you’re talking about. I’ve repeated the download/install of Desktop Manager and Device Software a few times and didn’t have to do any updates. What’s up with that?
Have you backed up your phone recently, or are things not working well enough to do that? If you can, do so.
I would uninstall the Desktop Manager and Device Software entirely, reboot my computer, then download and reinstall them again. I would cancel any updates if I wasn’t absolutely sure they were needed. Who is your wireless provider? Mine is VZW and they just released a new version of the Device Software (from v60 to v97). Even if you’re not Verizon, all the providers are probably passing down this new version from RIM. Maybe that’s playing a role in something going wrong.
I’d try the above and just see if I could get my phone talking to the Desktop Manager, then its App Loader next.
I’m hoping nothing happened like some kind of update started ON YOUR PHONE and didn’t finish. It’s one thing for your computer to get messed up, but I’d prefer my phone to stay working!
If you’ve been working on this a long time and getting frustrated, step away from it for a while and come back when your mind is fresh. That usually helps with me.
Keep me informed if you think I’m actually any help. I’m pretty much shooting in the dark.
Kelly
Alright Kelly, I’m back. Talk about shooting in the dark. I googled the error message and discovered that others have had the same problem. I went through some scary moments - mostly unsure of what I was doing - in following the instructions on this forum:
http://tinyurl.com/2q3ngy
I used the command line instructions linked on this discussion and proceeded to apparently erase my phone and reinstall the OS. I did have my phone backed up which gave me some peace of mind. However there were moments when I thought the phone might in the mode of the turning hourglass for all eternity.
The reinstall finished and I was back to the very basic setup, from what it looked like, that it had when I got it at the Verizon store. It prompted me to begin setting up my phone.
Instead I opened the Desktop Manager and selected Backup and Restore. I hit the Restore button and pointed it to the folder where my backup files were. It took maybe five minutes to restore the phone.
The restore was successful and best of all, when I opened the Application Loader I was able to grab some software I had downloaded and install it in seconds without a hitch. Apparently my problem is fixed.
Mike,
Wow–you’ve been through a nasty situation. I’m extremely impressed and happy for you that you got it resolved. Great job! So, are you now upgraded to the new OS version 4.3.0.97? If so, notice anything different?
Kelly
Thank you!!!! I got my pearl 2 weeks ago, and had been getting the “no software available” error. I am so glad to stumble onto your blog with so much helpful information.
The only difference I have noticed so far is when pressing the mute button, it now simply says, “Entering Standby Mode. Press the mute key again to exit standby mode,” rather than asking you to confirm whether you want to put it on standby.
Anyone having a problem with syncing calendars between the 8130 and outlook 2007? I can sync, but it doubles up on the phone and wants to delete future items on my outlook? Seems they are not communicating with eachother??? I have tried one way syncs and two ways with no luck. This is very frustrating trying to get my phone calendar the same as my outlook callendar and vice versa. ActiveSync worked much better on my 6700 PDA.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
So, is there a method by which i can have your superb theme on my blackberry phone without having the internet on the Blackberry device ?
Currently i have Desktop v4.3 installed, ie the latest blackberry software
Any help will be greatly appreciable.
Thank you
hello kelly,
i have been reading your device software info today. i downloaded it and installed it on my computer today. i connected my BB and started the application loader. there were all kinds on updates. i got a message that said i would need to active my e mail messages wirelessly after the update. i have a verizon 8130. i canceled as i wanted to check with you first. is that the way the update process goes. if so, i assume i would go through the set up wizard on my phone to start up my e-mail again. am i correct?
thanks for the time and effort you put into helping out folks like me!
w
Walter,
Verizon just released a new version of the BlackBerry Operating System (OS), from a version .60 to a version .97. The “Device Software” referred to in the above article is exactly this same OS. So, the updating you saw going on was a complete update of your phone’s internal software. I have not been through the update process myself yet as I wanted to read up on how it was going for others and what kind of problems were occurring, if any. Apparently, it takes quite a long time for the update, on the order of an hour maybe. I will probably not have time to do this (carefully, and capture screens to document the process in an article) until the weekend. If you google for “Verizon BlackBerry 4.3.0.97″, you can find some stories about what’s going on.
If you’ve already been through the update, as I suspect you have, you will probably have to follow through with the setup wizard to get your email working again.
I don’t like how users are getting drawn into the update without being fully informed about what’s going on.
Let me know how the rest of the process goes for you.
Kelly
@Johnjey,
To do what you want to do, you will have to follow the directions in the article above. Basically, you would need to download something called the “Device Software.” The Desktop Manager program needs that Device Software installed before its Application Loader will allow you to install apps, themes, etc.
The theme you are wanting to download is not mine but was designed by Matt Rogers of RogersMJ.com. Since you don’t have Internet access on your phone, you can’t use Matt’s over-the-air (OTA) download. You have to use the technique described in the article above. The directions have been followed by lots of people with success, so I think the directions are pretty good.
Now, Verizon Wireless customers will get a new version of Device Software that causes a lengthy update of their phones. I don’t think that will affect you since you’re a Sprint customer.
Let me know how it goes for you.
Kelly
@Shawn,
Sorry, but I have not tried to sync between my 8130 and Outlook 2007 yet, although is a hugely popular thing to do. Try poking around in BlackBerryForums.org if no one offers help on this blog. Sorry I can’t be of more help right now.
Kelly
THANK YOU! This is a severe oversight by Verizon and I even spoke with them on the phone twice to help me with this problem and they did nothing. It has been very frustrating to say the least. Until I found you
Thank you again!
kristin,
It’s not just Verizon, I think it’s pretty much all the wireless providers. And even RIM should be helping here. My blog directs thousands of people per month to download the Device Software to fix this problem. And my site is just a small one out of many larger sites doing the same thing. It’s atrocious. Glad you found the help you needed.
Kelly
Shane,
Are you a Verizon Wireless customer? If so, your timing of reading this article coincided with Verizon’s release of a new version of the “Device Software”–BlackBerry OS 4.3.0.97. That probably explains why you got the warning messages. I have not yet upgraded to this new version 97, so I can’t comment on the details of the process. If I can make time this weekend, I’ll do the upgrade, attempt to get some useful screen captures, and post an article with what I learn.
To try to answer your closing question, I’ve heard from another reader that after an OS upgrade on your phone, you have to reactivate your email accounts. By that I think it means you have to set up your email accounts again like you did when your phone was new. I hope I can be more helpful later when I do the upgrade myself.
Kelly
Kelly,
Well- I decided after about 15 minutes of debate to just go ahead and click next (probably the most apprehensive mouse click I’ve ever made). However, I just purchased my pearl on the 3rd so I figured Verizon had my back if the operation went bottoms up. After a very tense, and very long, wait (around an hour and a half) my phone was back up and running. The process, in a nut shell: Backs-up everything, erases everything, installs new OS, then puts back everything that was backed up. The phone in the meantime sits and does its spinning hourglass animation, sometimes flashing and disappearing, which was very unnerving to say the least. The process completed though, and the phone automatically found the Verizon network and reconnected. About reconnecting my email address.. This was not necessary, I’m guessing the settings were saved with the initial back-up.
Anyways, just wanted to let you know how it all went down. After the installation I was able to get the bPhone theme up and running no problem. Thanks for all the great info, I will undoubtedly be a reoccurring visitor of this wonderful site!
-Shane
Shane,
I am so grateful you returned to share that information, especially the level of detail. It sounds like it went the way it SHOULD have gone. I just hope others (including myself) have the same good fortune. Glad you also got the bPhone theme up. Do, please, keep coming back. You’re an asset to the blog!
Kelly
Dear Kelly
Thank you a million times.
Wow , i am amazed to see that kind and nice people still exists in this world.
For sure, i am going to recommend this website of yours to all my BB friends.
Thank you sir
I really appreciate your help and efforts to solve my problem.
Johnjey,
Thanks for YOUR kind words.
Kelly
First of all, thanks for a great site Kelly! I researched all I could before I got my Pearl. I read all 74 posts (yes, every one) to make sure I was doing everything correctly. I have a Verizon Pearl, and download v. 4.3 of the Desktop Software and Device Software. Both of these installations went well; my Pearl updated, reset and works fine. I then tried to install my first app, the BBlight. When I opened the application loader and tried to select the .alx file, the following message came up in the loader:
The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have the Blackberry Device software for the device that you have connected to the computer. Check with your wireless service provider or system administrator.
So I guess I’m getting some conflict between the versions of the Desktop Software and the Device Software, yet I downloaded both from the Verizon website. Can you help?
David,
Desktop Manager can be so flakey! It seems to think you don’t have the Device Software downloaded and installed. Obviously, you have. If you still have the download file, try reinstalling it (run the .exe file). It can’t hurt anything and it might fix your problem. If you have permanently deleted your Device Software download, you’ll have to download it again. I’ve had to do that 2-3 times in the last several months to overcome some kind of flakiness in the Desktop Manager, and it fixed my problems. I googled and found others reporting the same thing, so you’re not alone. Please let me know how this works out for you.
Kelly
Yo Kelly,
You rock! I love my toys and get anxiety when something doesn’t work. I still had the device software exe file so I reinstalled it and everything works, and I was able to install BBLight, which will be great when I watch some movies. BTW, in your post about installing BBLight, you mentioned that to keep track of where you extracted the .alx file because you’ll have to locate it when you open Application Loader. I freaked at first because I ran the Application Loader and just kept hitting the Next button everything synced but I never got an option to select the .alx file. On the third try, I decided to scroll down on the Device Application Selection Screen, and at the very bottom, the BBLIght .alx file was already identified, so all I had to do was click it.
Again, thanks a lot.
PS - I switched from a Treo 650 which was very traumatic at first. I used the Switch Device Wizard and was able to sync all my addresses, calendar, and memos. So far all the data looks great. I also have Outlook Express (which I hardly use) so I did a one way sync from my Pearl to Outlook to populate it, and now I can update my address in my Pearl via Outlook. As great as the Pearl is, it’s still easier to type on a PC!
PSS - Just read you email. I can’t thank you enough. My next journey is finding the best program to encode my videos.
David,
I’m so glad that fix worked for you.
About encoding your videos…I don’t especially like the Roxio Media Manager that comes with the Desktop Manager, but I have used it to convert several videos and it worked very well. I seem to remember it was just a kind of drag and drop operation. With my previous phone, I tried a number of free or cheap video conversion programs. None was perfect. I’ve used MOVAVI (movavi.com) but haven’t used it enough for Pearl video conversions to say whether I’d recommend it or not. If you have a video you’d like me to try converting, you can email it to me and I’ll see if MOVAVI does a decent job of it. I just upgraded to the latest version but haven’t really tested it.
Kelly
Thank you, thank you, thank you all!!!
I had a devil of a time trying to get the Media Manger software to show up, even after I updated the device software and re-ran the desktop software installation. I actually had to ***un-install the desktop software***, then re-install it to see the media manager icons.
All is well in the world again.
Mack
Mack,
I’ve had to remove/reinstall Desktop Manager a couple of times to clear up problems. You never know when it will help, but it’s not really that difficult an option to try. Not sure why the Media Manager “responded” to that.
Kelly
Hey Kelley,
I have the 8130 from Sprint and the “no applications…” issue. I went to the geographic location link and it sends me to a generic Blackberry site with desktop manager software download options (i.e. v4.3). I’ve installed this once already on my computer, but I guess I could try reinstalling it again.
Since I was curious, I went thorough the Verizon link and saw how clear the process was. I also noticed the different links (one for the device and one for the desktop). Unfortunately it doesn’t seem that Sprint has this differentiation. Is it becasue both are included in the Desktop Software download? I imagine I may have to hit up the Sprint store during lunch today, but just wanted to get a posting out there for Sprint users.
Thanks again for the help!
-Ankur
Ankur,
If you follow the link in my article (http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp), click the link for your region and carrier (say, North America and Sprint L.P.), then in the resulting page select in the dropdown menu “BlackBerry 8130 Wireless Handheld (TM),” you are taken to a page where you can download the OS. For Sprint users, it’s version 4.3.0.137.
I didn’t realize the terminology was a little different for Sprint users, so thanks for helping me discover that. I need more help from non-Verizon users to help me make my information more generic.
Stay in touch!
Kelly
HeLLO. I just go my blackberry pearl 8100 series about a week ago. I downloaded the cd that came with it. The desktop manager software. I keep getting the “No additional applications designed for your device were found.” So I google searched for hours and keep coming across the same thing to Download the DeviCe software that they dont tell you about. so I went to this page :
http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
and downloaded it. I even unistalled and downloaded everything again, and im still getting the SAME message. I dont know what else to do or if im doing something wrong. Please HELP ME!!!!
Tarah,
Who is your wireless provider? You sound like you are doing the right things, but perhaps the download links are labeled in a confusing way and causing you to download the wrong thing. What is important is that you download the BlackBerry operating system (OS) that is matched with your provider and your model. Each provider labels the downloads a little differently: Verizon calls the OS “Device Software.” Sprint calls the OS “BlackBerry 8130 Wireless Handheld (TM).” I haven’t checked all the other providers’ link labels. But if you tell me your provider and your phone model (8100, 8110, 8120, 8130?), I can check and make sure you’re downloading the right thing.
I know it’s frustrating, but you may be very close to having your problem fixed. So far not one reader has returned here to say they NEVER got it working.
Kelly
Thanks:0)
Its T-MoBile and my model is 8100. Im pretty sure I went to an downloaded the T-mobile (US) one. So hopefully you can help me :0)
Tarah,
If you follow the link you used before, and choose North America and T-Mobile, you’ll be asked to click a button by the 8100. That takes you to a window that asks for your phone number. (I had to Google all over to find a valid T-Mobile phone number to get past this window!) That takes you to a download page with these links:
T-Mobile BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8100™ Software Updates
Handheld Software (v 4.2.1.107)
Handheld Software Installation Instructions
Desktop Manager Software (v 4.2.2.14) English with Media Manager
The OS is the link labeled “Handheld Software (v 4.2.1.107).” You definitely need to download that one.
The Desktop Manager Software is labeled clearly. You need that one although it’s very clear you already had that one and even reinstalled it.
I downloaded and looked over the installation instructions for the handheld software. It seemed to be important that you do NOT connect your phone to your computer until AFTER you have installed the Handheld Software and have started up the Desktop Manager. You should look over those instructions since they seem to be fairly simple, clear, and straightforward.
Please let me know what luck you have with this.
Kelly
Ahh i diD aLL that…and it was still giving me problems.
But I figured it out (I think). I had to DELET all the applications (like the extra alarm application and the theme application that I had already downloaded and tried to put on my phone). Then I had to CLOSE out of EVERYTHING (the desktop manager too) AND then I reinstalled and had to unzip the applications (even though they were already in ALX format (I used ken wards zipper - a free program). Which moved them to my desktop (which I had to keep there (until application was on my phone) cause I tried to move them to a folder and that was ANOThER PROBLEM I ran into). Then I plugged my phone into the computer with my USB and opened up the Application manager and added one application at a time and WALA…it finally worked.
So I guess it was just a few little kinks that worked out.
Thanks for all the help and I hope this helps anyone else if they were stuck where I was. Boy was I getting so frustrated haha :0)
Thanks for not giving up on me :0)
Tarah,
Like Churchill said, “Never, never, never, never, never give up.”
As for your troubleshooting technique: well, ummmm…unconventional, to say the least. The name “Rube Goldberg” comes to mind. Anyhow, CONGRATULATIONS! YOu DId iT.
Kelly
I would have been lost without this entry. Thank you so much.
This is excellent information. Though, I eventually figured this out on my own, before reading this blog… I spent one full hour on the phone with Verizon tech-support concerning this exact issue. If only I had discovered your blog BEFORE I wasted so much time!
Great blogsite. Keep ‘em coming!
Ryan,
This one article has been the most popular for the longest time. (The bPhone theme review has been about equal.) It’s not just Verizon customers but seemingly all providers’ customers are having the same problem.
Kelly
Muchas Gracias. Very thanks, the bb pearl 8130 is very new here in Mexico, nobody can help me. Even after hours and ahours with the suplier. Very thankz Mister. Everything works at the first time.
Carlos,
De nada, amigo. Por favor, vuelva a visitarnos.
Kelly
Kelly, same old problem here too. AT&T 8100 Pearl. Have downloaded the Desktop Software twice, and the Pearl OS twice. (Yes, both are correct versions)
The Desktop software is functioning correctly on everything except on adding outside applications. I’ve tried numerous times to download and install a couple new themes that are listed for my phone, but keep coming up with the same message everytime, the usual, no applications found for this device.
I’m at a loss for any further answers…….
Bob,
First, make sure you’ve backed up your phone completely. If you still have your download files for DM and OS, keep them in a safe place so you don’t have to re-download them.
Have you tried using Control Panel’s Add or Remove Programs to totally uninstall and remove the both Desktop Manager and Device Software (OS)? If not, do that. Then do a reinstall of both and try the Application Loader again. A further extreme, bordering on superstition but probably with some actual technical merit, is to reboot the computer after each removal and each reinstall in hopes of keeping everything as clean and tidy as possible at every stage. I’d even be tempted to look at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\ and C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\ to see if the removal REALLY removed everything. Maybe one more thing is I’d do the battery pull, wait, replace battery on the phone just to make sure IT wasn’t causing some wierd problem before I plugged it in with the USB cable. Lastly, based on decades of troubleshooting highly complex electronic and computer systems, I recommend you locate a rabbit’s foot, a lucky horseshoe, a four-leaf clover, and throw some salt over your shoulder.
I’ve not had anyone yet report they simply could not solve this problem after trying everything I suggested. So, keep the faith and try again. And let me know what happens, please.
Kelly
So far I’ve tried everything you’ve suggested above except going in and seeing if ALL the files were removed from the computer when I used the add/remove programs. Even did a defrag and restart on the computer between downloads.
I have backed up the phone entirely more than once to make sure etc.
I’m currently downloading the OS software for the 4th time and going to try running the exe. file on it more than once to make sure it runs correctly.
Next I will try the throwing the salt over the shoulder deal.
Bob,
I did some searching on the web for anything I might be missing. How recent is your AT&T 8100’s OS version? I’ve found some info that implies (correctly or not–you can never know for sure) one needs to upgrade to the most recent OS in a situation like you seem to be in. This is based on RIM knowledge base entry KB14450. I’m not totally convinced this is your problem, but it’s something to consider.
I hope my info intended for 8130s is not misleading or downright incorrect for the 8100.
Kelly
