BlackBerry Desktop Manager Wouldn’t Install Applications

PostScript, March 9, 2008: Verizon Wireless 8130 owners take note that Verizon recently released a new version of the BlackBerry Operating System (OS) for your phone. So if you follow the directions in the article, you will download “Device Software” (same as the OS) version 4.3.0.97 that might be newer than what is currently installed on your phone. Connecting your phone and starting up the Desktop Manager will draw you into updating the internal software (OS) of your phone whether you wanted to or not. If this is confusing to you, leave me a question below. For more information, see my article on upgrading the operating system. Kelly

~~~
BlackBerry Desktop ManagerMaybe I missed something but when I installed the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software that came with my phone, I thought I installed everything I needed. Apparently, I didn’t–but I’m not sure who was at fault. No matter, as I learned how to fix it.
My first attempt at installing an application (”app”) on my BlackBerry was with one that came highly recommended: Opera Mini (a free browser that is a worthwhile alternate to the standard BlackBerry Browser).I downloaded it to my computer, unzipped it, and tried to add it using Desktop Manager’s Application Loader. But I got a confusing error message: “No additional applications designed for your device were found”. To make the story short, I discovered that your computer needs not only the Desktop Manager software installed, but something called the Device Software.
PostScript, March 21, 2008: I’ve learned that Verizon uses the terminology “Device Software,” but other wireless providers may use a different wording. For example, Sprint refers to this software as “BlackBerry 8130 Wireless Handheld (TM).”
No additional applications designed for your device were found
Since the Desktop Manager can be used with various models of BlackBerry, and new models are coming out all the time, the software needed to make Desktop Manager work with a specific model must be downloaded and installed separately. Makes sense if you think about it, although Verizon didn’t make that clear in the instructions. (Who out there thinks I actually read the instructions?)
The Device Software (as well as upgrades to Desktop Manager, if you care) can be downloaded from: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp. From that page you have to select your geographic region, your wireless service provider, “Personal Email” (unless “Corporate Email” makes sense for you–I’m not totally sure what’s up with this selection), and enter your 10-digit phone number. Click the Device Software link (version whatever-it-is-at-the-moment), do the download, and run that file. I did not take careful notes of what happened next but I think I had to accept/decline some options to do updates (I declined but later it seems they were accepted anyway). I then ran the Desktop Manager program, selected the Application Loader, and observed some updating happen to my phone. At some point along the way the phone rebooted itself to complete the updating process. After doing all that, the Application Loader recognized my phone and the standard apps it already had installed.
Finally, I was able to add the Opera Mini app using Desktop Manager/Application Loader and was delighted at how easy it was. An icon for Opera Mini showed up on my Home screen; selecting it started up Opera Mini and from there it was very intuitive how to use it (although I choose to read Help against my better male instincts).
Later, I came to find that my 8130 does not have a ton of extra memory for applications. How I addressed that is in another post.
P.S.–Credit and thanks for this fix must go to the admin of AllBlackBerry.com (see details).
Thank you, thank you — I’m downloading now, so no final report on the phone’s status just yet — but since I ran into the exact same error, I’m optimistic that this will work.
I hope it worked for you, Allison. One reason I spend so much time on this blog is in the hope that what I learn can be used by others. I have benefitted immensely over the years from the help I’ve received from others on the Internet, so it’s about time I pay something back. Would love to hear back to know if your problem got fixed.
Hi. I am having the same problems as Kelly. i just got a new Pearl with new software. I tried loading new apps to the phone and got this msg “The BlackBerry desktop software does not have BB Device Software for that device that you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service or system admin.” Since this is a personal phone, I do not have a system admin.
” I removed it, downloaded and installed it and it was older than my phone. I am still having problems loading apps into the phone. The problem maybe that I am using XP 2000. I am not sure if this software supports this old a version of XP. But then again, why wouldn’t it?
Any help would be GREAT!!! Thanks!
Malar,
If you read and follow carefully my entire post on this problem, you have a good chance at resolving your problem. The computer I used was running Windows XP. Did you mean that yours is running Windows 2000? XP and 2000 aren’t that different, so I doubt that is the problem. I did not read where you downloaded the Device Software that allows your BlackBerry Desktop Manager to work with your Pearl. That is the most important step you must take. Go to http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp , and scroll down the page till you find (1) your geographic region, and (2) your wireless provider, and click that link. From there, follow the directions as best you can. If you can get the Device Software loaded on your computer, you might get your problem fixed. Let me know how it works out.
Darryl,
Allison and Malar who commented on this post never returned to let me know if my solution worked for them or not. You might want to email me (kellydcarter AT yahoo.com) outside this blog with more information. Is your desktop running WinXP, Vista, or what? Am I correct that you downloaded the Device software, having chosen the right region and provider (for me that was North America, Verizon)? On the Verizon site, did you choose Personal Email or Corporate Email? Did you choose the right model of Blackberry (I’m assuming 8130)? Did you choose BlackBerry Device Software v4.3 (updated 11-13-2007)?
Kelly,
I am using Win XP; I have installed v4.3 software. In fact I downloaded, removed and reinstalled the software that came with BB (it was 4.3) and still no dice! I am with Bell Mobility (Canada) and spoke with their tech today for about an hour on the phone to no avail – he told me to call the manufacturer of the software to get correct settings. My BB was purchased in Dec. with the most updated software. I chose personal email, etc. Hope this helps you in helping me solve this issue.
Thanks,
I’m glad you got your problem fixed. It’s not clear what made the difference unless you had been working only with the Desktop Manager Software (which is 1/2 of the solution) and then, finally, the Device Software (which is the other 1/2 of the solution). That was the key for me–realizing I needed to download and install the Device Software. Thanks, Darryl
I installed:
- VZAccess manager (disc included with phone)
If I download the Device manager, will I be able to do it?
by the way, my “blackBerry Desktop manager doesn’t look like the one on top of the page. i have only 4 icons:
- Synchronize
- Backup and restore
- Application loader
- Switch device wizard.
What is the fifth one on the picture???
I was able to transfert from my Palm Tungsten T5 my:
- Note pad
- Tasks
- Calendar
as I said I’m a basic user, i have a Ipod to listen to my music, A palm pilot to do everything else than calling. I have access to my email addresses without problem, just what I want (and I will be really happy with my phone) is to be able to:
Mazhev,
Do you have a micro SD card for your media (pictures, music, etc.)? You really should get one, if you don’t. For your micro SD card, make sure it’s formatted and has folders created to put the media in the correct places. See my comment #2 to Adriana here: http://blackberry8130.wordpress.com/2007/12/09/tips-and-tricks-at-discoverblackberrycom/. Transfer your pix from your old phone into the “pictures” folder on the micro SD card.
To create your contacts on your computer and transfer them to your BlackBerry, see this post: http://blackberry8130.wordpress.com/2008/01/19/managing-contacts-in-the-address-book-using-excel/.
Let me know how it goes if you follow the above two recommendations.
Hi,
I have a question about saving the contacts on a BB 3180. The phone in question actually belongs to my boss, an attorney, who needs it for all of his contacts and calendar capabilities. When I first installed the Desktop Manager onto my computer, everything transferred just fine. Then I performed the first sync with Outlook 2007, it deleted all but one of his contacts (which I thought was a little weird) and I found them in the “to be deleted” folder. Somewhere else on the net, I read that to correct that problem, uninstall the software that came with the disk and then go to the website and download it from there. The service he uses is Alltel and they weren’t really very helpful with this problem after spending nearly an hour on the telephone with them trying to get a resolution.
Now, having read the previous posts, am I correct in reading that there is a separate program that actually has to be installed into the BB itself? I have yet to d/l the DM back into my computer, it’s incredibly slow (I use XP).
Is there anything that you could suggest as far as this problem goes?
Thanks so much for the review, it has been very helpful. I’m learning way more about his phone that I am about mine (a simple razr…lol).
Debbie
Feb 15, 2008 - 07:02:26
Debbie,
You’re not the first person to have to sync a boss’ cell phone. I hope you’re getting paid extra for this! ;)
First let me make clear that the post that you commented on dealt with the issue that most wireless providers (e.g., Verizon, Sprint) are apparently not making clear that after installing Desktop Manager from the CD that comes with your phone, you ALSO need to download the specific Device Software for your model phone and for your provider. Some things apparently work without the Device Software loaded, but not the Application Loader–and I’m not certain about Synchronize feature.
I can believe the AllTell folks couldn’t figure it out, as I keep getting reports that my blog has helped people better than tech support at their wireless provider or RIM. I wish that weren’t true–and I’m not gloating about it–but there have been cases of that reported.
Now, to answer one of your questions, there is nothing you need to download into the BlackBerry itself. The Desktop Manager and Device Software (2 separate programs) need to be installed on the computer. You can get both–and most recent versions–from the web using the link I provided in the article.
When you try a sync (whether using Outlook, Yahoo, ASCII Import/Export, etc.), you have to be careful in WHICH DIRECTION you do the synchronizing. I imagine your first try with your boss should have been to sync from a fully populated Outlook contact list into an empty (or partly empty) BlackBerry Address Book. So, the first sync should have been FROM Outlook TO BlackBerry. Only if your boss adds a new contact to the BlackBerry then wants to add it to Outlook should you ever need to sync FROM BlackBerry TO Outlook.
The Desktop Manager Synchronizer should warn you if you’re attempting a sync in a direction where some contacts might be deleted or overwritten. So, if in doubt, cancel the sync and double-check the direction you’re attempting to sync in.
I do not do Outlook syncing myself; I’ve only done syncing with Excel files and with Google Sync (Google Calendar), and I’ve done OK with that. So, if I end up being wrong or incomplete in what I’ve told you, please return and straighten me out.
Let me know how things progress, please.
Thanks,
Kelly
Hey Kelly,
In case I forgot to mention it with my first few posts, thanks for a very useful and well-organized blog… It’s especially nice to be able to bond with fellow BB rookies and help each other out a bit… So thank you.
Now, as a sidebar to Debbie’s issue (and Debbie, I agree with Kelly – you should be receiving a stipend for dealing with your bosses’ BB needs)… I was able to sync my Pearl with my Outlook WITHOUT the device-specific software installed (although it is certainly something that should be installed regardless). I DID have an issue the first time I synced, though, where through some strange series of events, I deleted all of my contacts on one end of the sync while they remained on the other. After that frightening episode (and after backing everything up – again!), I very carefully went to the “Sync Settings” in Desktop Manager (DM) and set them all in one direction, from where the information was to where I wanted it, and re-synced. After that, I was able to set the arrows in both directions – the way that I need them – and I haven’t had a problem since.
Like I said – it’s more of a sidebar than an explanation or a solution – just so you don’t feel alone, Debbie. And that device-specific software (the stuff Sprint never told me about :-/ ) SHOULD be installed anyway, so that when your boss comes back and asks you to load new software onto his BB, you don’t have the same issues so many of us have.
Good luck (hey, with all your new tech-know-how maybe it’s time for you to trade in that RAZR!).
My article above points you to here: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp. There you can download either the latest version of Desktop Manager or Device Software. I think what you need is just the Device Software. You’ll need to specify your wireless provider and your model of phone. Also, you’re asked to choose Personal or Corporate email. I’m not totally sure what that’s about, but I chose Personal. I have had many blog visitors get their problems fixed by using that advice, so I trust you will, too. Make sure you read the article in its entirety. If you don’t get it fixed, get back in contact with me.
I’m not crystal clear on what you’re going to try. You do need Desktop Manager installed (I recommend the latest version). You do need the Device software installed (same recommendation)–to add/remove Applications from your phone using your computer (versus over-the-air). Hi Kelly,
Here I am again, I still don’t have a resolution as to how to get the contacts from the Outlook 2007 to the BB, but I did learn something about MSN email (my boss subscribes to that service) that is to be used in conjunction with the Outlook.
Apparently, there is a “connector” which needs to be downloaded where a person can actually email all the contacts that were in the BB to Outlook by using the Import/Export on MSN. Then, when it is received by the Outlook, it can then be exported to the BB. This sounded ideal, but it didn’t work for me. So, today, I took a break from it..lol. I did have a thought, though. Is it possible to retrieve information from my computer or the MSN account using the BB? If so, how is this done?
Tomorrow, I’ll start over from scratch, again. Oh, one more thing. While I was in the process of the aforementioned “activities”, my boss got Alltel customer service on the telephone. A young lady informed me that the 8130 has a “memory leak”. I wanted to ask, “On which bush?”. Anyways, I am not too clear on whether or not it is something that is specific to Alltel or the 8130 itself. She said that individual owners would be notified as soon as their update is available. She wasn’t very specific about the release date, either. So, I signed my boss up for the BB newsletter that will notify BB owners of this update as soon as it becomes available.
I’ll keep you updated on the progress. But, as it stands at the moment, I’m not sure how to deal with the “leak”.
Thanks for letting me post here about my experiences and I’ll be back often to learn as much as possible.
Debbie
p.s., Sean, thanks for the suggestions. My boss has indeed compensated me very well for my efforts…(O: And I’ll have to think on getting a BB, not sure if I need to have a phone that leaks…lol.
Feb 20, 2008 - 07:02:12
Debbie,
I don’t think I can answer all your questions at once, or comment on everything, but here’s a start.
I know a tad about “connectors” but haven’t had to download or use one yet. Would like to know where you’re downloading one from.
I’m not sure I can help more on the Outlook sync because I don’t know if we resolved the earlier issue of “directionality” of the syncing.
About “memory leaks”: That refers to the gradual process of a computer (or BlackBerry) running out of free memory, usually due to (1) a defect in a program (operating system or application), or (2) a continuing build-up of files such as messages, logs, temporary files, pix, flix, etc. [Actually, I wouldn't define (2) as a "memory leak" but it has the same effect.]
Does the 8130 have an inherent problem with memory leaks? I can NOT find any evidence of that after a LOT of searching. There are plenty of claims but nothing convincing to me. Whether your 8130 is “leaking” memory or not depends on what applications you are running, whether you’re leaving them running when you should be closing them, whether you’re piling up tons of trash files you don’t need, etc.
I bought my 8130 in November and haven’t had a single problem of memory leaks. As described in my post on Viigo, I did load my phone with too many apps–Viigo being the straw that broke the camel’s back–and that caused my phone to go nuts till I unloaded Viigo. After that, I learned to delete some junk I didn’t need, like the huge sample video file. I reinstalled Viigo and didn’t have any more problems. I NEVER pull out my battery–the so-called Hard Reset–like many people say they have to do to keep memory freed up. I would find that unacceptable. I do have my phone set to Auto Power Off at night, so that amounts to a Soft Reset every day. Not sure if that would be hiding or fixing a memory leak or not.
Still, memory problems are plaguing a lot of 8130 owners, so I’m trying to stay on top of that and may do a post on that sometime.
I spent about 2 hours last night in frustration trying to get this thing to work. I had purchased a contacts manager from Handango only to find out I couldn’t get it to work.
As for why Verizon doesn’t tell you the about the device driver software, I’m sure it’s the same reason they don’t allow you to install your own ringtones on their phones and will not allow you to use the full Bluetooth functionality. It’s all because they want you to purchase their applications and not 3rd party ones. They can control things a little better with normal cell phones because they can lock out certain functionality. It allows only them to offer the applications at a controlled cost. $2.95 ringtone, anyone?
To me, it ranks up there with banks charging you money for withdrawing your money from an ATM. It’s robbery. Just my opinion.
@Ignacio,
You say “it goes straight to device and desktop manager versions.” Well, that’s OK, isn’t it? You want to download the DEVICE software (latest version)–that was the whole secret to the article. Go back and give that a try–download and install the DEVICE software (for 8130 and Sprint). Then see if the Application Loader stops giving you that error. It has apparently worked for everyone who has tried it.
Feb 22, 2008 - 11:02:56
taylor,
Are you doing Options > Status to determine how much free memory you have?
If you pull the battery, wait a bit, then replace the memory, is there still very little memory free? (This should close any applications you left open accidentally. This isn’t the proper way to close them, but it’s a quick way to determine if that was part of the problem.)
Are you keeping a lot of old messages or deleting them?
You did good to move your songs, pix, flix, etc. to a media card. But messages and applications that run do NOT take advantage of the media card, so you have to keep the “system” memory clean, too.
Let me know what you find.
Antonia,
Relax…you can fix this! What you may have missed in the article is the need to download a SECOND program named the DEVICE SOFTWARE. There are different versions of the Device Software for the 8100 and 8130–because they are actually different devices (although similar).
Follow the link provided in the article, specifying your provider (Verizon), your model (8130), and your email (personal not corporate), etc. HOWEVER, make sure when you finally get to the downloads page, you pick the DEVICE Software and not the Desktop software.
Download and install that program. I always recommend rebooting your computer to make sure everything is “clean,” then try again to get your Application Loader working. So far, those directions have fixed the problem for everyone I know of.
Let me know how it works out for you.
Thanks a lot Kelly! That fixed my problem! Do you know of any programs I can use to change the trackball color on my 8130. I used to have the Pimp my Pearl color track back for my 8100 but it doesn’t work on the new Pearl. Any suggestions?
Feb 23, 2008 - 08:02:00
Antonia,
What a pro! You did it!
It is impossible to change the color of the 8130 trackball because it has only a single, white LED behind it. The 8100 had several LEDs of different colors. EVERYbody wants to do this, but you just can’t with the 8130.
Thanks for returning to post your wonderful results. That really gets me pumped up that my blog is helping nice people like you.
Still not able to get the app loader to install any software.
I have an 8130 from Sprint. I never installed the software that came with the phone, but I did download it from the Blackberry site. From what I can see, the download for 4.3 now contains both the Desktop manager and the device manager.
When I plug my phone in to my computer, everything works and i see two icons on my taskbar for Blackberry Device Manager and Connected – Desktop Manager.
I look at the device manager and my phone is in there.
However, when I try to install any application file, it says “No Additional Applications were found for this device”
At a loss of what to do. This is also happening at Work with the same software installed. Home is Vista, work is XP
Feb 28, 2008 - 06:02:03
Craig,
I think you’re mistaken about the Device Software being “built into” the Desktop Manager. There are probably dozens of different versions of the Device Software–for different models and different wireless providers. Each is 50-100MB in size. No way can they could be built in. I’ve repeated this technique many times, as have numerous readers. Try my instructions again and make sure you do the download of the Device Software (not Desktop Manager) for the model and wireless provider you use. So far, I have not had one person report they could NOT solve this problem by carefully following those instructions. And hundreds (or more) have done it (only a tiny number have left comments). I think your two icons are misleading you. I have got this working on both XP and Vista. Please try again and let me know what happens.
Kelly
P.S.–Many features of the Desktop Manager work WITHOUT the Device Software. But not the Application Loader. It absolutely requires the Device Software. It’s a HUGE problem not being addressed by wireless providers. I have now had several thousand readers (in only 2-3 months) click the link to go download the Device Software. And I’m just one web site providing that service.
Thanks for the response. Not sure what else I can do, but it’ll repeat the steps over in this thread.
When I go to the Blackberry download site and select my provider (Sprint), I am given the option to download two sets of files. The first one is is the Blackberry Desktop Software 4.3 which is 500+ megs in size. The other is “Blackberry 8130 Wireless Handheld” software.
Selecting the Desktop Software 4.3 gives me just one file to download and the title is “Download includes: Desktop Manager and Device Manager” This is why I said the Device Manager software was “built in” because it’s included in the description.
After downloading the file and going to install, it wants to install both the Desktop Manager and the Device manager. Both of which were installed correctly.
I don’t really see any other avenues of getting to a separate second download for Device Software. :( Is it the “Blackberry 8130 Wireless Handheld” download I need?
Love the blog, by the way. Thanks for helping us out!
WOOT. Thanks a lot =) I just got confused by the wording of the downloads.
Feb 29, 2008 - 01:02:53
Craig,
This problem isn’t YOUR fault. It’s a disgrace that wireless providers aren’t doing more to make sure their customers receive the software they need to get the full value out of their phones. And the wording of the download sites needs improvement. I’m just glad you hung in there through all the frustration. I KNEW you would succeed!
OK, I have been reading about this issue for awhile and now I am experiencing the problem for myself.
I don’t think I’ve missed anything, Kelly. I downloaded not only the Blackberry desktop manager but also the device software. I successfully ran the device software installer and went to the Application Loader.
When I run the Application Loader it seems to see all the device stuff and updates. I go through the steps of installing the updates and the Application Loader hangs at the point: Connecting to device ROM. It hangs for a long while and then closes with this error message:
Unspecified error encountered [A:0x00000001]
I have done this multiple times.
This last time I deleted all photos and anything I thought could be hogging device memory and the problem was the same, so I don’t think memory is the issue here.
Can anybody help?
Mar 1, 2008 - 10:03:17
Mike,
This doesn’t have the feel of a problem one can think through–there are too many puzzle pieces missing. I would try dropping back and trying to recover some stability then work forward from there.
First, I’m not clear what all the updates are you’re talking about. I’ve repeated the download/install of Desktop Manager and Device Software a few times and didn’t have to do any updates. What’s up with that?
Have you backed up your phone recently, or are things not working well enough to do that? If you can, do so.
I would uninstall the Desktop Manager and Device Software entirely, reboot my computer, then download and reinstall them again. I would cancel any updates if I wasn’t absolutely sure they were needed. Who is your wireless provider? Mine is VZW and they just released a new version of the Device Software (from v60 to v97). Even if you’re not Verizon, all the providers are probably passing down this new version from RIM. Maybe that’s playing a role in something going wrong.
I’d try the above and just see if I could get my phone talking to the Desktop Manager, then its App Loader next.
I’m hoping nothing happened like some kind of update started ON YOUR PHONE and didn’t finish. It’s one thing for your computer to get messed up, but I’d prefer my phone to stay working!
If you’ve been working on this a long time and getting frustrated, step away from it for a while and come back when your mind is fresh. That usually helps with me.
Keep me informed if you think I’m actually any help. I’m pretty much shooting in the dark.
Alright Kelly, I’m back. Talk about shooting in the dark. I googled the error message and discovered that others have had the same problem. I went through some scary moments – mostly unsure of what I was doing – in following the instructions on this forum:
http://tinyurl.com/2q3ngy
I used the command line instructions linked on this discussion and proceeded to apparently erase my phone and reinstall the OS. I did have my phone backed up which gave me some peace of mind. However there were moments when I thought the phone might in the mode of the turning hourglass for all eternity.
The reinstall finished and I was back to the very basic setup, from what it looked like, that it had when I got it at the Verizon store. It prompted me to begin setting up my phone.
Instead I opened the Desktop Manager and selected Backup and Restore. I hit the Restore button and pointed it to the folder where my backup files were. It took maybe five minutes to restore the phone.
The restore was successful and best of all, when I opened the Application Loader I was able to grab some software I had downloaded and install it in seconds without a hitch. Apparently my problem is fixed.
Mar 3, 2008 - 10:03:07
Walter,
Verizon just released a new version of the BlackBerry Operating System (OS), from a version .60 to a version .97. The “Device Software” referred to in the above article is exactly this same OS. So, the updating you saw going on was a complete update of your phone’s internal software. I have not been through the update process myself yet as I wanted to read up on how it was going for others and what kind of problems were occurring, if any. Apparently, it takes quite a long time for the update, on the order of an hour maybe. I will probably not have time to do this (carefully, and capture screens to document the process in an article) until the weekend. If you google for “Verizon BlackBerry 4.3.0.97″, you can find some stories about what’s going on.
If you’ve already been through the update, as I suspect you have, you will probably have to follow through with the setup wizard to get your email working again.
I don’t like how users are getting drawn into the update without being fully informed about what’s going on.
Let me know how the rest of the process goes for you.
Kelly
Mar 3, 2008 - 10:03:16
@Johnjey,
To do what you want to do, you will have to follow the directions in the article above. Basically, you would need to download something called the “Device Software.” The Desktop Manager program needs that Device Software installed before its Application Loader will allow you to install apps, themes, etc.
The theme you are wanting to download is not mine but was designed by Matt Rogers of RogersMJ.com. Since you don’t have Internet access on your phone, you can’t use Matt’s over-the-air (OTA) download. You have to use the technique described in the article above. The directions have been followed by lots of people with success, so I think the directions are pretty good.
Now, Verizon Wireless customers will get a new version of Device Software that causes a lengthy update of their phones. I don’t think that will affect you since you’re a Sprint customer.
Let me know how it goes for you.
Shane,
Are you a Verizon Wireless customer? If so, your timing of reading this article coincided with Verizon’s release of a new version of the “Device Software”–BlackBerry OS 4.3.0.97. That probably explains why you got the warning messages. I have not yet upgraded to this new version 97, so I can’t comment on the details of the process. If I can make time this weekend, I’ll do the upgrade, attempt to get some useful screen captures, and post an article with what I learn.
To try to answer your closing question, I’ve heard from another reader that after an OS upgrade on your phone, you have to reactivate your email accounts. By that I think it means you have to set up your email accounts again like you did when your phone was new. I hope I can be more helpful later when I do the upgrade myself.
Kelly,
Well- I decided after about 15 minutes of debate to just go ahead and click next (probably the most apprehensive mouse click I’ve ever made). However, I just purchased my pearl on the 3rd so I figured Verizon had my back if the operation went bottoms up. After a very tense, and very long, wait (around an hour and a half) my phone was back up and running. The process, in a nut shell: Backs-up everything, erases everything, installs new OS, then puts back everything that was backed up. The phone in the meantime sits and does its spinning hourglass animation, sometimes flashing and disappearing, which was very unnerving to say the least. The process completed though, and the phone automatically found the Verizon network and reconnected. About reconnecting my email address.. This was not necessary, I’m guessing the settings were saved with the initial back-up.
Anyways, just wanted to let you know how it all went down. After the installation I was able to get the bPhone theme up and running no problem. Thanks for all the great info, I will undoubtedly be a reoccurring visitor of this wonderful site!
First of all, thanks for a great site Kelly! I researched all I could before I got my Pearl. I read all 74 posts (yes, every one) to make sure I was doing everything correctly. I have a Verizon Pearl, and download v. 4.3 of the Desktop Software and Device Software. Both of these installations went well; my Pearl updated, reset and works fine. I then tried to install my first app, the BBlight. When I opened the application loader and tried to select the .alx file, the following message came up in the loader:
The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have the Blackberry Device software for the device that you have connected to the computer. Check with your wireless service provider or system administrator.
So I guess I’m getting some conflict between the versions of the Desktop Software and the Device Software, yet I downloaded both from the Verizon website. Can you help?
Mar 15, 2008 - 04:03:16
David,
Desktop Manager can be so flakey! It seems to think you don’t have the Device Software downloaded and installed. Obviously, you have. If you still have the download file, try reinstalling it (run the .exe file). It can’t hurt anything and it might fix your problem. If you have permanently deleted your Device Software download, you’ll have to download it again. I’ve had to do that 2-3 times in the last several months to overcome some kind of flakiness in the Desktop Manager, and it fixed my problems. I googled and found others reporting the same thing, so you’re not alone. Please let me know how this works out for you.
Yo Kelly,
You rock! I love my toys and get anxiety when something doesn’t work. I still had the device software exe file so I reinstalled it and everything works, and I was able to install BBLight, which will be great when I watch some movies. BTW, in your post about installing BBLight, you mentioned that to keep track of where you extracted the .alx file because you’ll have to locate it when you open Application Loader. I freaked at first because I ran the Application Loader and just kept hitting the Next button everything synced but I never got an option to select the .alx file. On the third try, I decided to scroll down on the Device Application Selection Screen, and at the very bottom, the BBLIght .alx file was already identified, so all I had to do was click it.
Again, thanks a lot.
PS – I switched from a Treo 650 which was very traumatic at first. I used the Switch Device Wizard and was able to sync all my addresses, calendar, and memos. So far all the data looks great. I also have Outlook Express (which I hardly use) so I did a one way sync from my Pearl to Outlook to populate it, and now I can update my address in my Pearl via Outlook. As great as the Pearl is, it’s still easier to type on a PC!
PSS – Just read you email. I can’t thank you enough. My next journey is finding the best program to encode my videos.
Mar 15, 2008 - 06:03:17
David,
I’m so glad that fix worked for you.
About encoding your videos…I don’t especially like the Roxio Media Manager that comes with the Desktop Manager, but I have used it to convert several videos and it worked very well. I seem to remember it was just a kind of drag and drop operation. With my previous phone, I tried a number of free or cheap video conversion programs. None was perfect. I’ve used MOVAVI (movavi.com) but haven’t used it enough for Pearl video conversions to say whether I’d recommend it or not. If you have a video you’d like me to try converting, you can email it to me and I’ll see if MOVAVI does a decent job of it. I just upgraded to the latest version but haven’t really tested it.
I’ve installed this once already on my computer, but I guess I could try reinstalling it again.
Since I was curious, I went thorough the Verizon link and saw how clear the process was. I also noticed the different links (one for the device and one for the desktop). Unfortunately it doesn’t seem that Sprint has this differentiation. Is it becasue both are included in the Desktop Software download? I imagine I may have to hit up the Sprint store during lunch today, but just wanted to get a posting out there for Sprint users.
If you follow the link in my article (http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp), click the link for your region and carrier (say, North America and Sprint L.P.), then in the resulting page select in the dropdown menu “BlackBerry 8130 Wireless Handheld (TM),” you are taken to a page where you can download the OS. For Sprint users, it’s version 4.3.0.137.
I didn’t realize the terminology was a little different for Sprint users, so thanks for helping me discover that. I need more help from non-Verizon users to help me make my information more generic.
Mar 25, 2008 - 05:03:05
Tarah,
Who is your wireless provider? You sound like you are doing the right things, but perhaps the download links are labeled in a confusing way and causing you to download the wrong thing. What is important is that you download the BlackBerry operating system (OS) that is matched with your provider and your model. Each provider labels the downloads a little differently: Verizon calls the OS “Device Software.” Sprint calls the OS “BlackBerry 8130 Wireless Handheld (TM).” I haven’t checked all the other providers’ link labels. But if you tell me your provider and your phone model (8100, 8110, 8120, 8130?), I can check and make sure you’re downloading the right thing.
I know it’s frustrating, but you may be very close to having your problem fixed. So far not one reader has returned here to say they NEVER got it working.
Mar 25, 2008 - 07:03:31
Tarah,
If you follow the link you used before, and choose North America and T-Mobile, you’ll be asked to click a button by the 8100. That takes you to a window that asks for your phone number. (I had to Google all over to find a valid T-Mobile phone number to get past this window!) That takes you to a download page with these links:
T-Mobile BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8100™ Software Updates
Handheld Software (v 4.2.1.107)
Handheld Software Installation Instructions
Desktop Manager Software (v 4.2.2.14) English with Media Manager
The OS is the link labeled “Handheld Software (v 4.2.1.107).” You definitely need to download that one.
The Desktop Manager Software is labeled clearly. You need that one although it’s very clear you already had that one and even reinstalled it.
I downloaded and looked over the installation instructions for the handheld software. It seemed to be important that you do NOT connect your phone to your computer until AFTER you have installed the Handheld Software and have started up the Desktop Manager. You should look over those instructions since they seem to be fairly simple, clear, and straightforward.
Please let me know what luck you have with this.
The Desktop software is functioning correctly on everything except on adding outside applications. I’ve tried numerous times to download and install a couple new themes that are listed for my phone, but keep coming up with the same message everytime, the usual, no applications found for this device.
I’m at a loss for any further answers…….
Apr 2, 2008 - 07:04:34
Bob,
First, make sure you’ve backed up your phone completely. If you still have your download files for DM and OS, keep them in a safe place so you don’t have to re-download them.
Have you tried using Control Panel’s Add or Remove Programs to totally uninstall and remove the both Desktop Manager and Device Software (OS)? If not, do that. Then do a reinstall of both and try the Application Loader again. A further extreme, bordering on superstition but probably with some actual technical merit, is to reboot the computer after each removal and each reinstall in hopes of keeping everything as clean and tidy as possible at every stage. I’d even be tempted to look at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\ and C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\ to see if the removal REALLY removed everything. Maybe one more thing is I’d do the battery pull, wait, replace battery on the phone just to make sure IT wasn’t causing some wierd problem before I plugged it in with the USB cable. Lastly, based on decades of troubleshooting highly complex electronic and computer systems, I recommend you locate a rabbit’s foot, a lucky horseshoe, a four-leaf clover, and throw some salt over your shoulder. ;)
I’ve not had anyone yet report they simply could not solve this problem after trying everything I suggested. So, keep the faith and try again. And let me know what happens, please.
So far I’ve tried everything you’ve suggested above except going in and seeing if ALL the files were removed from the computer when I used the add/remove programs. Even did a defrag and restart on the computer between downloads.
I have backed up the phone entirely more than once to make sure etc.
I’m currently downloading the OS software for the 4th time and going to try running the exe. file on it more than once to make sure it runs correctly.
Next I will try the throwing the salt over the shoulder deal. :)
Apr 3, 2008 - 01:04:08
Bob,
I did some searching on the web for anything I might be missing. How recent is your AT&T 8100’s OS version? I’ve found some info that implies (correctly or not–you can never know for sure) one needs to upgrade to the most recent OS in a situation like you seem to be in. This is based on RIM knowledge base entry KB14450. I’m not totally convinced this is your problem, but it’s something to consider.
I hope my info intended for 8130s is not misleading or downright incorrect for the 8100.
Kelly
Bob UNITED STATES says:
Apr 3, 2008 - 11:04:45
Did all the above last night and it still didn’t work. I’ve been downloading the OS from RIMs’ website after going “through” AT&Ts’ to get to it. I would think this would be the latest version of the OS.
By the way, I’m using ver. 4.3 of the Desktop Mgr. so that should be ok too.
This is all discussed over at BBForums with alot of the same problems, but they eventually get solved.
I spent 5hrs on this yesterday, and about wore out the reset and defrag functions on my laptop. :)
Maybe I can find some salt with BIG, COURSE grains so it’ll do some damage when I throw it over my shoulder, because that’s what I feel like.
Just another thought….I do not have any data pkgs. on this phone. Just basically using it as a cell phone/organizer etc. Could that have anything to do with it?
Apr 3, 2008 - 12:04:52
Bob,
I don’t see how not having a data plan should matter.
I’d skip the defragging of your laptop hard disk. That’s way oversold as a method of fixing problems.
Wow–we’re really at the bottom of the barrel. Well, here’s yet another idea. Is it possible you can try all this on a different computer? I don’t mean for a long-term solution but to isolate the problem as being either on your computer or on your phone. Salt-throwing jokes aside, a troubleshooting technique I resort to when nothing else seems to help is to simply CHANGE SOMETHING, ANYTHING. Sometimes it may provide a clue. So, maybe if you change the computer you’re using, a clue may emerge.
I’ll hang with you as long as you’re willing. I don’t like to give up.
Thanks for the help Kelly. By the way I really enjoy your blog here about this great phone.
I was thinking the same thing about changing the computer. I have a desktop in the house but it’s used by the wife and I’ll have to use dynamite to dislodge her from it long enough to do this.
Another idea I had, was maybe updating the OS to 4.2.1.109 from Rogers Wireless, after removing the vendor.xml file. Supposed?? to be a newer Pearl OS than what AT&T is using right now.
Just grasping at straws here. I’ll try the other computer thing first though before doing the Rogers thing.
Maybe someone else will read this along the way and it will help them eventually.
Hi Kelly- thanks for all this help and insight you provide (again!)
Been getting the hour glass… oops didn’t know I had to buy a little media card… so that’s on its way from crackberry.com and will back up the photos soon…. been emailing them one by one (and that’s a pain cause I live in the sticks and have to drive into town to email with the BB) Anywho… My baby is a month old Verizon pink pearl….
I wanted to install/ uninstall/remove all the extra gobbilty goop memory suckers on my pearl, but I can’t seem to do/figure out the following:
1) My windows (XP) explorer doesn’t detect my little pearl.
2) The Device Manager (Ver 4.3.0.7) /Desktop Manager (Ver 4.3.0.15 August 2007) team that I have doesn’t have any little button for media, only Synchronize, Backup + Restore, Application Loader, and Switch Device Wizard.
So the question is… should I download and use the Desktop Software v4.3 b25 with Media Manager (English) (212.656 Mb) from the Blackberry website? Is it better? Newer? Am I allowed to cause I’m a Verizon person?
My memory saving goal is: to remove the sample pictures and ringtones that I will never use. I also wonder if I should take off BBMaps cause I have both Google maps and VZ Navigator (which is the big memory hog, I know). And if I take off applications like tasks, memo pad, voice dialer, will I ever be able to chose to put them back?
Forgive me and my multiple questions!
Hey Kelly, just a quick note to tell you that I was successful last night by changing to my desktop computer. I downloaded the Manager and OS, both the same as I put on the laptop, and it was successful the first time out.
I did nothing different than I had done previously on the laptop.
I got the bPhone theme loaded so far. Now maybe I can get some sleep! :)
Thanks again for your help and encouragement……Now to figure out what the problem with my laptop is in doing this.
Apr 4, 2008 - 07:04:04
Bob,
Well, I guess that’s progress. You now know that something is wierd with the laptop, or at least the combination of laptop and BB software. And you know the procedures you were following were good. And your phone is good. It’s less difficult to find an answer if you have fewer questions (variables), so that’s progress. Please keep me informed if you ever find the root cause of the problem.
Makani,
I have only a moment to reply. If your BB isn’t detected as a USB storage device, check these things:
1. Options > Media Card. Set Media Card Support=ON. Set Mass Storage Mode Support=ON. Set Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected=YES.
2. You may need to do a Windows update to get any fixes for USB problems.
The other questions you asked…let’s discuss after you try the above.
Thanks Kelly- I think I’ve solved a couple of my problems… apparently I have all the most to date software… but I’m still working on figuring that out and until my little media card comes I don’t think I can change the options about media yet.
I also wanted to SHOUT to remind everyon about how important using that “switch applications” to CLOSE out all those left open programs. I go from slow performance and zero bytes available in memory to tens of more than 16 Megabytes free just by closing all those left open programs. IMHO, what a silly software blip! Hope RIM fixes that one… cause I’m sure it’s a huge part of this memory leak thing the pearl has.
Thanks for ROCKIN’ website full of SO much great insights and help!!!
Apr 5, 2008 - 12:04:19
Makani,
I didn’t realize you didn’t have your media card yet. You’ll really enjoy having that.
I agree about the App Switcher. A number of readers have found that useful in revealing that they had too many apps open. I also agree that RIM left a big hole in their OS design by having some apps close when you press the Escape key, but others just hide in the background. All apps should behave the same way. Also, apps running in the background should probably be more obvious similar to how apps are “minimized to the taskbar” in Windows–mostly “out of sight” but still obviously running. I would hope that most Windows (and Mac) users have learned that if you left every program running (but minimized), and performance starting suffering, that maybe it would be time to close some programs. The BB OS doesn’t give you any obvious sign that that could be your situation. You have to know about the App Switcher.
Stay in touch!
Hi. I don’t have the device software. I live in Mexico and my service provider is Iusacell. The service provider appears in the Download site, but my model (Pearl 8130) does not appear nor in iusacell’s website. I have 2 questions then:
1. What do I loose if I don’t install the device software?. Right now I’m installing all programs OTA, and when not available I’m installing them with javaloader app.
2. What could happen if I install some other device software such as Verizon’s for 8130, or Iusacell’s for 8830?
Apr 6, 2008 - 04:04:31
Eduardo,
Bienvenido, amigo. Thanks for visiting my blog. I’ve been hoping for some readers from Mexico when I learned the 8130 was released there.
1. You aren’t losing anything by not having the Device Software loaded as long as you can download OTA, or especially if you know how to use JavaLoader for downloads not available OTA. You obviously know what you’re doing if you can use JavaLoader. But the Desktop Manager’s Application Loader makes it easier for those who would find JavaLoader too difficult to use. You will eventually want access to your provider’s operating system (OS–same as Device software, or Handheld software) download when it’s time for a new version. I hope the OS will be available for you by then.
2. I know it’s possible to do what you suggest. You may have to edit an XML file (or two: device.xml or vendor.xml). I’ve been exploring that technique but am not yet competent to give advice. You can find details about that on BlackBerryForums.com–information intended for very technically sophisticated readers only. Oh, but do NOT try to install for any model other than 8130 (such as 8830), as that might leave your phone non-operational. But another provider’s 8130 OS? Possible, yes.
I hope you come back and find useful information. Please tell your friends in Mexico to visit, too.
Gracias,
Kelly
If I knew Spanish better, I’d definitely respond in Spanish. Spanish is a beautiful language.
About your problem: Over the last few months, I’ve had the same problem once or twice. What I remember doing that helped was to completely remove (Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs) the Desktop Manager and the Device Software, reboot the computer, then reinstall them. Could you give me the link to download the IUSACell device software?
Try this: Options > Advanced Options > Host Routing Table > (press Menu key) > Register Now. If you are asked, select “Reset Service Books.”
If that works, remove your battery, wait 10 seconds, and replace the battery. It will take several minutes for your phone to come back to life. See if it works.
Hello Kelly,
First of all great support site.
I’ve received the “No additional applications designed for your device were found” error while attempting to add the TWC.alx (Handango Weather Channel Software) file through the Application Loader.
Blackberry: 8130
OS: Vista
Device Version V4.3.0.71
Desktop Manager Version 4.2.2.14 w/sp2
Carrier: Sprint
The device and Desktop mgr versions above were advised from blackberry support since I had upgraded the Desktop Mgr Ver to 4.3 previously and received the same error. I was told, as I have read on several msg boards the device & dev mgr was not communicating properly due to versions not communicating. The downloads from the carrier specific site has also been done.
If you can assist, it would be greatly appreciated.
Apr 19, 2008 - 08:04:03
William,
I’m skeptical about the advice to downgrade Desktop Manager. I recommend you uninstall both Desktop Manager and Device (Handheld) Software, reboot your computer (for good measure), reinstall Desktop Manager (I’d go with newest version), reinstall Device Software, reboot your computer (for good measure), reboot your phone (battery pull–remove, wait, replace), then try again.
All that rebooting may not strictly be necessary but it has worked for me when I seemed to be stuck.
Let me know how it works out for you.
I don’t know for certain. I know you can download a version of Desktop Manager without Media Manager. That might allow you to keep the Creator Premier version. First, I’d experiment to see if Creator Premier will work with your phone. If not, I would try to contact Roxio and see if they can answer your question. I’d be grateful if you return here to share your results.
Apr 21, 2008 - 02:04:17
Alesha,
I’m guessing, really, since I’ve never seen Creator Premier. But if it’s like Roxio Media Manager that comes with Desktop Manager, it has windows where I can choose “Devices” (including disk drives, USB drives, USB devices like the BlackBerry), and media folders. I would try running Creator Premier, plugging in my BlackBerry to the USB port, and see if it’s recognized as a device. One thing I’m skeptical will work is that when you attempt to copy media to the phone, Roxio normally asks if you want to copy “as is” or copy with “optimization” for the particular device. Creator Premier would have to know “about” the phone to know how to optimize the conversion of the song or video.
May 28, 2008 - 10:05:08
Angela,
The problem you’re fighting is the single biggest reason people come to my blog. So, if it’s any comfort to you–you’re not alone. Even non-blondes have difficulty with it (BTW–I used to be blonde when I HAD hair).
If you want to add ringtones and MP3s (or any media) to your phone, you really don’t need to use Roxio or the Desktop Manager.
You do need a media card, though. It’s really essential to have one, so I’ll assume you do or will get one (microSD card, 1GB-4GB). Do Options > Media Card, and make sure Media Card Support =On, Mass Storage Mode Support=On, and Auto Ensable Mass Storage Mode When Connected=Yes.
Now, when you plug your Pearl into your computer using the USB cable that should have come with it, your computer should recognize it just like it’s a USB drive (flash drive, jump drive, thumb drive, whater you want to call it). Now, you can copy media files right into the media card. Just make sure you put ringtones in the ringtone folder, MP3s in the music folder, etc. When you try access those new files on your phone, give it a minute or two for the phone to “find” them. The list of “All Songs” or whatever will come up without the songs maybe, but if you wait a minute or so, they should eventually pop up.
The nasty problem you’ve been trying to solve is more essential to solve to download applications, not so much for media transfer.
I hope this makes your life easier so you can love your Pearl like the rest of us. We all share in the frustrations at times.
Hello Kelly,
I know I am in the wrong forum, and I apologize for that, but I have a question that I just cannot seem to get answered and you seem to be the most knowledgeable person I have seen about the 8130.
I want to add mp3 songs to my new blackberry 8130. I have the most recent OS and desktop software. When I click on the media manager to add songs, I get the error, ” The certificate file is missing or has been corrupted. Please re-install it.”
I have tried re-installing like 3 times. I still get that message. Is there a way to fix it so I can actually put mp3 songs on my phone? Or maybe there is another way to put the songs on there?
Thanks!
Jun 3, 2008 - 08:06:09
Phillip,
No problem about being in the “wrong place” for a question. I take them anywhere they come up.
An error message about a “certificate” is concerned with digital security of some sort. Possibly the song you’re trying to move was purchased online and can’t be copied due to Digital Rights Management (DRM).
If you made a media card (you really SHOULD have one if you like songs and videos), set your phone for Mass Storage mode (if not already), plug in the USB cable to your phone and computer, and your Media Card should open up just like an ordinary USB drive (flash drive). You can simply drag-and-drop your MP3 into the music folder on the card. Perhaps that will work. I’m no expert on DRM so I don’t know if you can defeat that protection that way. In the past what I’d do is burn a CD with a protected song, then rip it back off. The protection is removed that way. I don’t advocate stealing music but if I pay for it, I’m going to use it the way I want.
Let me know how it goes for you.
Kelly,
Thank you so much. I went out and bought a 1gb card (for only $19!), and inserted the card into my computer, and it was already set up with the folders for songs, photos, ringtones, etc. Really nice!
I do have one more question, though. I am trying to set up my email. I have a couple different hotmail accounts and have tried them both. When I enter the email address and password, it comes up with a screen that says something about not being able to verify the email, and to contact my email service provider. I have already checked, and I can set up a hotmail account on it. Can you help me set up my email?
Also, I dont know if it helps or not, but I was able to set up a blackberry email address. I just really want my hotmail on there.
Thanks again,
I had the same problem. To activate a Hotmail account you have to sign up for Hotmail Plus @ $20/year. After doing that I have had no problems accessing my email.
That’s great that you guys shared that information. I’ve heard that the “free” Hotmail just doesn’t work well with BlackBerry. I’m pleased to hear that at least the for-pay version does.
But!!!!! now when I open the Roxio Media Manager Is state their is nodevice connected (but yet I can sync all the contacts I want download all kinds of apps, when roxio is running my phone displays phone connected to Desktop). I talked to tech support from sprint for about 4 hours today trying to solve the problem. The best they could do is get my media card displayed with roxio but no device memory. Please help!!!!!
Dennis,
Roxio has a terrible reputation for not working well. It has worked for me but I just configure my BlackBerry for mass storage mode and access it like a USB drive. I can easily do without Roxio.
Common recommendations are to totally uninstall the Desktop Manager including the Media Manager, reboot, and reinstall. Some have had to do it multiple times.
If you ever had Roxio installed before, separate from Desktop Manager, I’ve read that can create a problem.
On this page are some instructions that might help: http://www.blackberryforums.com/general-8800-series-discussion/93071-media-manager-problems.html.
Let me know if you get it working. If you want to bypass it and do it another way, let me know and I might be able to help there.
Thank you for the info, I have read a lot of site on this issue and most of them say the same thing like you (give up on roxio and use mass storage mode). Well I think I’m going to finally take that route. It is a shame that BB has such an unstable program with the desktop manager. The love my 8130 some days I would prefer it over my wife. I will never say anything bad about BB it’s self but that roxio well that is another story. One last question could the problem be from some of the apps that I loaded into my phone. The reason I’m asking is because I original had the desktop manager installed on my laptop at home that is when my problem started after installing the handheld software. So I toke the BB disk to work and loaded it on my desktop (with out the handheld software) and had the same problem. Just something for you to think about.
Thanks for all the help I will still watch this site for answers.
But I will say this is the site I have been to for answers!!
I think themes for any 8100-series (Pearl) should be compatible. Themes shouldn’t care about minor differences between Pearl models.
Much thanks for the solution(s) and/or pointing out the solutions to the app loading problem. You’d think Verizon would have their act together on this issue ? Based on the number of responses here and elsewhere, there’s LOTS of folks having this difficulty.
I ran the OS updater as suggested (why does it require 300Mb of crud ??) and was immediately able to load new apps and delete unwanted stuff (e.g. large sample video). Now that I have Opera Mini loaded, web surfing is soooooooo much easier then BB’s browser.
So I’ve got the desktop manager and the software installed… Thanks for pointing out that I needed a second file installed…
Now when I load my Media Manager I no longer get an error, but it just closes… Opens so I can see if for a few seconds and poof it’s gone… Now could this be due to my not having an SD card inserted yet?? I would imagine I could transfer something so small like a pic via this program w/o having to have a media card…
Or do I now have to do something on my bbp? I had a hard time transferring via bluetooth last night and it turned out that I had to go into the media section and set it to recieve… This was after I had already successfully paired my bb w/ my old cell… It did end up working so now I have a few ringers at least to do me until I can get MP3 files moved onto my bb… I would just like to know that the program is working ok… Thanks Kelly…
Jun 29, 2008 - 11:06:36
Jen,
You’re really getting into your BlackBerry and tackling all kinds of technical challenges. That’s impressive. Sounds like you’re making great progress.
Desktop Manager is a little flakey for me, too, on my Windows XP computer. Not as bad on my Vista computer. My XP computer is shared by family members so it is usually having problems of one sort or another, so it may not be DM’s fault all the time.
If you continue to have DM problems, as frustrating as it is, I have to recommend you remove it (Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs) completely, reboot your computer to clean it out, and reinstall. I’ve heard one person say he had to load Service Pack 2 (Windows SP2) to get his to work right.
Not having a microSD card yet should not affect DM’s operation at all. You can transfer media into Device Memory–just be careful you don’t fill up precious memory.
Keep me posted on your progress.
Hi Kelly, thanks for the reply… I’ve pretty much given up on the DM… It works for everything except the Media Manager… Will just wait to get an SD card then I’ll transfer my MP3’s and videos over…
I’m the type of person that needs to know everything there is to know about my cell or in this case my BB… I’ve been wanting a BB, which I’ve never had before for about a week now and didn’t take long for me to run to the store to buy it, which I did Saturday after work… LOL I’m now on day 2 and I’m pretty close to knowing the ins and outs of this BB…
I spent close to 12 hours yesterday learning everything that I think I need to know about it… If only I can fix the lighting I’ll be happy… Although maybe in this case it’s not like a cell and doesn’t need to turn the backlight on… It’s just that I like to see who or what is texting me before I grab my phone…
Which reminds me of another question…
The msgs folder… I went to an option to “seperate” SMS and Email… That was ok at first, but it took some time to find my inbox… I ended up having to go to the menu, view folders then select inbox to find all of my texts…
I’d like to keep them all seperate, but my SMS inbox is the main folder I’d like to access from the msgs icon… There are email icons seperate that I could go to if I wanted to just look at the emails I get from either of the 2 email addresses I’ve set up, why can’t I just view my SMS Inbox w/o all the extra work??
BTW I’ve put the folder back to not seperate so that I atm have access to my inbox w/ minimal work… Alright I think that’s all for now…
Some wireless carriers make you pay extra for MMS (multimedia messages–pictures, videos, songs). Sprint does. Not sure which others. You need to call your carrier and ask to be sure. But I’m pretty sure that’s the explanation. Sorry.
If you’ve already done that, then an OS update probably will help at least some. I’m not familiar with the Sprint version of the OS, as I’m on Verizon. But Verizon’s most recent update seemed to manage memory better. So, yes, I’d recommend it. It might help if you read my article on OS upgrade, realizing with Sprint the directions may vary a bit: http://blackberry8130.wordpress.com/2008/03/08/how-i-upgraded-my-blackberry-operating-system/.
Thank you for the informative website Kelly. It has been a great help. I am however still having problems with installing apps. I downloaded DS and installed it but I still get the same messages. I am not sure what I am doing wrong . Should I uninstall it all and reinstall with DS first then DM? I tried to read through all of the posts for help but it is a little daunting lol. I am using Vista and have the latest DM 4.3, DS for Bell even though I am on MTS in manitoba. I have email the company for thier take but they are as confused as I am lol. Thanks if you can help.
Jul 14, 2008 - 08:07:36
Denny,
I have installed Desktop Manager and Device Software on both an older XP machine and a newer Vista machine, and both work. However, I’m not sure both worked the first time, and I’m certain there has been some flakiness along the way. What I have advised others is based on some real-world experience with a little superstition thrown in. Here it is:
1. Uninstall both DM and DS. Remove every trace if you can. If you know where their installation folders are, go there and delete them by hand.
2. Reboot your PC.
3. Reinstall DM and DS.
4. Reboot your PC.
5. Pull the battery on your phone to reboot it (remove, wait, replace, wait).
6. Try again to see if DM and App Loader works.
The problem you’re dealing with is more than widespread, it may be near universal. It’s the single biggest reason this site has reached the level of popularity it has. It is a terrible problem. Someone should be publicly flogged (mostly kidding). Let me know how it goes for you. I’ve never had anyone return to say they gave up and never got it working.
John,
I need more info, such as what kind of error messages you’re seeing. BTW–my article was not really about upgrading the OS, but rather simply installing it on the computer. For whatever reason, the App Loader needs to have the OS available on your computer for it to load apps. Anyhow, if you followed the directions above, you should have been able to load apps. I have the Pearl 8130. I was able to load BlackberryAlerts by BBymel. However, it does not work properly. I ‘ve been in touch with the customer service and they gave me an over the air download/upgrade, but it still doesn’t work. All I want is to be alerted to missed messages via tone or vibrate every minute or so. Most all cell phones do this. Amazing that BB does not have this very simple feature. I guess I will just have to live without it. I did the upgrade as to OS that you suggested and how you suggested. I’m very confused as to what you mean when you state that the OS was for the computer only. My 8130 OS now says, v4.3.0.97 (Platform 3.1.0.51). I guess what I did was right. Any other advice? Also, thanks so much. You helped solve my memory leaking problem. I have a media card and everything is great. Finally, I downloaded Trooper Typing and played it. Now, I can no longer delete it, even following the steps you suggested.
John,
Sorry that BB Alerts isn’t working for you. I haven’t tried it, so I can’t offer any advice. I agree that BB is missing some simple features found on other phones.
To try to clear up the confusion, when I wrote this article, the download of the OS was necessary for your computer to make the Application Loader work. Later I wrote an article about downloading the OS for the purpose of upgrading the OS on your phone. Those are two separate and unrelated reasons one might download the OS. So, in the above article, I meant to say that you were downloading the OS for your computer so App Loader could work, not to upgrade the OS on your phone.
I’ve heard from others that they can’t delete things that I was able to on my phone. I haven’t figured out what is different to explain that.
I only have a moment to reply (I’m at work!). Sounds like you’ve missed a step where you set up your synchronization to use Outlook instead of the ASCII Importer/Exporter (which causes a file to be written or read). I can give you better instructions when I have more time, but in Desktop Manager, choose Synchronization and look for where you can select Outlook instead of ASCII Importer/Exporter. And make sure you set the direction of synchronization for the direction you’re sync’ing: TO Outlook or TO your phone.
Feb 26, 2009 - 06:02:19
robert,
You don’t have to do anything yourself to get them in the proper format. When you download a game/app capable of running on a BlackBerry, it typically comes in a compressed/ZIP format. When unzipped, it usually results in two files: one .alx file and one .cod file (can be more than one). When you attempt to install the game/app using Desktop Manager, you select the .alx file, but it’s the .cod file(s) that actually gets installed.
Now, if you try to download over-the-air (OTA) or from the web using your phone’s browser, the file will be in .jad format. You don’t have to mess with unzipping or using Desktop Manager.
I’m no expert on the Palm Tungsten, but according to info I found through searching the web, you can transfer your contacts to Microsoft Outlook (if you have it), then from Outlook, you can export your contacts to a CSV file as mentioned in my article on “Managing Your Address Book Using Excel.” Basically, if you can transfer your contacts to any other program, you may be able to then export them to a text file (e.g., a CSV file). Search for and read my “Managing…Excel” article to understand the concept. If you find a way that looks promising, let me know and I’ll see if I can’t help further.
Jun 1, 2009 - 04:06:07
caribbean,
It is most important that you have a Media Card (microSD card) for your Pearl. The internal memory (Device Memory) on the Pearl is too small to hold many photos, videos, or songs. If you fill up your Pearl’s internal memory with media files, your Pearl will begin to behave badly, such as deleting messages before you get a chance to read them. If you don’t already have a card, be careful not to purchase the newer SDHC cards, as they are not guaranteed to work with the Pearl. Please read my article, All About Media Cards, for a lot more information.
Desktop Manager has a feature, Media Manager, that can be used to move media files to and from the Pearl. But many people complain about Media Manager. I find it much easier to enable Mass Storage Mode in my Pearl and treat it like a USB flash drive (also known as a thumb drive, jump drive, memory stick, etc.). Then, I can just drag-and-drop files onto my Pearl with ease. Again, my article, All About Media Cards, explains much of that.
Let me know if you have more questions.
agni,
The files that are missing may be for the application instead of the device or desktop. If you tell me more about the app, I might be able to help. But for now I recommend you re-download the app (unzip it if required) and try again. Often an app consists of more than one file, for example a .alx file and one or more .cod files. You select the .alx file to install, but the .alx file tells the loader which .cod files need to be loaded. If one or more is missing, you will get an error message. Does that make sense?
I don’t think you need to upgrade the OS on your phone, and upgrading Desktop Manager definitely will not help. The issue must be with your wireless carrier. Perhaps their customer support can help.
About the ringtone, I have that same problem sometimes. It’s because the normal volume of the song isn’t as high as the regular ringtones. There are audio editing programs that allow you to boost the volume of a song. Audacity is one, and it’s free. But it’s pretty difficult to use. There’s no other way to make it louder.
Me too. In the last 4 months we have attmpted 6 installs. This blog is more concise so maybe in a week or so I’ll try again. I download software all the time and the BBDS/M
will not install. Haven’t been able to upload or send photos anymore either. Back to my coolpix I guess. Toys are fun…sometimes. Thanks for this blog.
Wigstand,
I’m not clear on what you’re having trouble installing.
