You can do it with the phone itself or with your computer. It's safer to do it with the phone. Another thing, is your microSD card labeled "microSD" or "microSDHC?" The Pearl is not guaranteed to work correctly with microSDHC cards (which are a newer technology). The 2GB cards can be either the older microSD or the newer microSDHC.
