BB addict in NY,
I, too, am a blazingly fast typer on a conventional computer keyboard (or, back in the day--a typewriter). I think a good typist can quickly adapt to SureType, but it helps a lot to follow the advice I've given (not my original ideas) in my articles on typing on the Pearl. I think people's misunderstanding about SureType almost doomed the Pearl from a sales/return point of view. That and--even worse--the Pearl's too-small device memory. But I still see a lot of people packing Pearls to this day.

I just wanted to also comment on the use of the SureType on the BB 8130.

When I purchased my first Pearl, the 8100, I too returned it the next day because of SureType. I was concentrating too much on the box of suggestions coming up and not enough on what I was actually trying to type.

The Pearl is the first phone I have owned in which I have a texting plan, and what lured me in, besides it being a BB, was the fact that its a qwerty style keyboard. I average 70 wpm on a computer keyboard and I am familiar with the location of all the keys. So after deciding to give the Pearl another swing I fell in love!

I can see this being extremely difficult to learn if you're coming from a basic phone, say using miltitap, but like I said, just concentrate on what you're trying to type and less on the box of suggestions and you may just get the hang of it!

I just got a VZW Pearl and I was wondering what Trooper Typing was so when I googled it, I ended up here. Great post, btw. I was a little skeptical about the Pearl's mini QWERTY and using SureType. I have always used SureType when I texted on a regular cell phone, but I sort of felt like it was pointless to have a BBerry if I still have to use SureType. Yet, I didn't want a full sized BBerry, b/c I already have to carry one of those around for work. Anyway, I decided to get the Pearl since it is small and cute and pink (at least mine is). So far SureType hasn't been that bad. There are times when it is frustrating, like where I am typing a proper name that has a weird combo of letters. The good news is that it remembers those names for later use. I have found that you can pretty easily switch b/w Multi and Sure on the menu in most apps. The one thing that I haven't gotten used yet to is using SureType on a condensed QWERTY as opposed to a standard phone pad which is what I have been used to for so many years. Maybe I will give Trooper a try to practice. Thanks again for the info.

Hi Kelly, at first I just wanted to get rid of the icon too. However, while I still find it an annoying practice on verizon's part, the game is actually pretty fun and has greatly improved my typing with the suretype keyboard! Just my 2 cents. Love the new site.
